The biggest difference between Sumrall and Napier

I’m seeing a lot of fans who think potentially hiring Sumrall would be Billy Napier 2.0. On paper it’s a fair comparison as both are G5 coaches who didn’t have big time P5 Head coaching experience. However, one main separator is sumrell has had success as the head coach AT 2 programs. He turned around Troy right away in his two seasons there along with doing a good job with what Fritz left him at Tulane. ULL was the only head coaching job Napier had prior to Florida . He also didn’t have any big time coordinator experience in the SEC perior to the Florida job.
Sumrall was DC for a top 25 defense at Kentucky in 2021 while also being a former lb at Kentucky so he has experience as a player and coordinator in the SEC. So success in two places and SEC experience are the big separators between the 2.
I truly think if we go hard we’re Sumrall it’ll come down to how big politics will get involved more then fears over his lack of experience as Blake Ruffino brought up an interesting point on his pod that Landry may not want to poach a coach from Tulane and place him at the biggest school in the state.

If UK were smart, they'd fire Stoops now and try to bring in Sumrall before LSU potentially comes knocking.

The kentucky fans are ready for sumrall

I hope whoever is picking our coach is not doing comparisons with Napier to make their case on why he should be hired.

Kentucky absolutely needs to move quickly if they want him. Becsuse if LSU decides he’s the guy theirs zero chance Sumrall chooses Kentucky over LSU even tho he’s a former player there. Auburn is another spot that has connections to Sumrall it’ll get interesting if they decide to fire freeze

i’m really not sold on Sumrall
Great success at Troy, but Neal Brown had great success at troy
Co-Dc at Kentucky
So was Matt House
Some success at Tulane
Tulane got worse under him… they were 12-2 11-3 thrb2 years before he got there and went 9-5.
He’s 6-1 thisnyear but hasn’t played Memphis (yet), USF, Navy, Temple (yet)
Beat 2 P5 teams in Northwestern and Duke but they aren’t exactly powerhouses

In sumrall’s defense, 60 players from that Tulane squad portaled out it was essentially a brand new team when he got there. The portal and NIL has changed what taking over a previous roster use to look like for new coaches so he has to hit the portal hard to rebuilt that team so all things considered 9 wins isn’t bad. This years Tulane team is significantly worse talent wise to have them at 6-1 is impressing coaching.
