First MLB game in person for me was in LA in early August of 1978 vs the Padres with my Dad. Gaylord Perry on the mound for SD and Don Sutton for LA, 2 Hall of Famers. We sat down the right field line about 10 rows behind the foul poll. The airplane ride from Birmingham and big league game in two days was pretty big for this kid. We didn't do things like that.

On gameday, it was raining on the way to Dodger Stadium and I was seriously almost in tears. My great uncle, who was driving and who we were visiting, laughed and told me they hadn't had a rainout in like 10 years. It was going to be ok.

Bought a hat, got to our seats and then Garvey hit 2 HR's in his first two AB's and the place was going nuts. He hit his third AB to the wall, so close. Needless to say as a 7 year old, he was my favorite player instantly.

Dodgers won 3-2, Sutton got the win going 9 with 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk and 5 K's. Padres had HOF'ers everwhere too. Ozzie Smith, Gaylord Perry, along with Dave Winfield.

We stayed after the game to get Garvey's autograph on my glove as my uncle knew where they came out (also got Lasorda's, Dusty Baker and the backup catcher, cant recall his name but he played a good bit...eta, Ferguson). Lasorda came out of the stadium in a huge Mexican sombrero with the fans cheering him on, he had definitely already been drinking.

Glove got stolen at practice within a month that summer. I was devastated. Probably talked about it too much.
