Played for the 1st time in about 15 years a couple of weeks ago with some rented clubs and it felt really good.
I got about a $450 budget for clubs. Is facebook marketplace my best bet?

$450
A decent used driver would likely be $200 or so.
Some guys like me have extra clubs, putters, sets.
If you have a close friend, maybe they’d hook you up with a loaner set until you are ready to take the plunge, get fitted, and drop coin.

Note that I do have a nice ping driver.

Do you have a putter?
I would almost guarantee that a friend or relative has a decent one in the garage.

A pawn shop will be your best bet for that budget. Facebook will be a touch more for a decent set.
If it's me, I'd save up a bit more and get you a decent set if you think you're going to stick with it.

Get a starter set from Costco for a little more.

Where are you located? If near the Nola area I can probably hook you up.

How old is it? I’m not a big equipment guy but the drivers made in the past 3-5 years are WAY better than the older ones. They are so much more forgiving and easy to hit.
You can get a used Callaway Epic or something like that for like $150 and if your driver is older than 7 years or so it’ll be way better than it

It is probably about that old. The swings I made with it at the simulator, range and course felt really good. I can upgrade it later.

Pretty much. It's not going to get you anything great but you'll definitely be able to find a full bag of name brand stuff.

Takomo irons are honestly probably perfect for you. They are decent clubs and cheap. I think a new set online is about $450
Used market I would stick to something like callawaypreowned or secondswing over Facebook marketplace unless you are 100% sure on the seller.
A lot of fake stuff and rip offs on Facebook marketplace

Go to Stackedgolf.com register and watch the auctious there. I've been a member there for about 6 months and it's legit and most sellers are great people.

If you look around you can find some great deals. I just bought never used 2021 Wilson Staff CB irons for $400.

Prayers sent. Lol. Sound like me. I played often when I was in the Navy when I wasn’t deployed. Retired and for some reason didn’t pick them up for 20 years. Son in law got into it and got me playing again . Wish I’d never quit.

That’s a plenty enough budget for a dude getting back into it.
I’ve never paid for a golf club and will go smoke your arse with my freebies.
Don’t be dick.

I did not mean to come across as a “dick”.
I’m not sure what I said that triggered you.
I think we agree that IF we have friends willing to let us try various clubs, we could save some money.
I’ve given away iron sets to friends. If they like them, they play them.
I don’t think anyone can buy a game, but I enjoy new stuff.
Beating me probably won’t get you invited to the Masters or anything.
You’d just be beating a generous old man.
