HEIC is a terrible file format.

Rant on: Every year I work on the end of year slide show for the kids Mtb team. Every year I have a google drive where I ask parents to upload photos so I can use them (90% of the shots I use are from my own DSLR/Mirrorless cameras). Every year, I get UNUSEABLE heic shots from iPhone users. HEIC is so tightly compressed that heavy edits the photos and exaggerate the flaws. I often get, sharpening artifacts around edges, weird banding in skies and strange colors. I HATE them.
HEIC might be a great storage format, but a lousy sharing format.

It reminds me of Sony, just inventing new formats for the purpose of being a pain in the arse. Memory stick, Mini Disk, etc.

digital8? was that sony exclusive?
also that shitty firewire link on their recorder
could never get that to work correctly on a PC even after buying a 'high end' firewire pci card.

If your pic/vid is already compressed, then switching to any other compression is bad but a single compression should t be awful.

I'm extracting them into photoshop of Vegas Pro and then outputting them. But they look awful no matter what program I open them in.

Don't most of the newer iphones capture pictures in the .dng ProRes/lossy form now (if enabled)?
I'm definitely no photographer though... dunno.

I Never used digital 8. I always used DV tapes and DV converters and never had issues. I heard about it, but by the time I was knowledgeable in the field even DV was dying and slowly being replaced with direct to DVD or internal hard drives in the consumer market. The Professional market was still mainly BETA SP, Panasonic’s DVCPRO eroded some of SP’s dominance in the broadcast market even as Sony created its own Professional flavors of Digital and HD on Special BETA SP tapes. Eventually HDV would come out as the last tape prosumer format before switching to Memory sticks or SD cards.

Sure. They can read them, and some android phone cameras can even image in that format. But it's also not the PRIMARY image capture file format like it is for Apple phones. However, that's not the issue.
The reason Apple switched to HEIC, wasn't because of image quality, it was mainly to save onboard space. With no option for expandable storage like many Android phones, Apple needed a more efficient format to keep users from running out of memory with photos and videos. The trade off was off the apple ecosystem, the file format suffers from the problems noted above.

I recently converted ~3000 .heic images to .jpg using opensource digikam in batch mode. I haven't done anything demanding with them, but the look fine.
For a while I had lots of trouble with .heic txted from wife's iPhone to my Android. One or both phones must have had some software upgrade. They now automatically come over as .jpg.

All I know is anytime someone sends me a HEIC image, it won't open.

I know it will change just based up me posting this, but the original post got 24 UVs to 0 DVs? When I posted this, I thought BEST case it woul be 50/50.
Truly surprised that this many people on this type of forum dislike the format as much as they do.
