Transaction costs for new vehicles cross 50K for first time

Average transaction prices for new vehicles hit $50,080 in September, the report released Monday found, rising 2.1% from August and 3.6% year-over-year.
Forbes Article
In 1976 the inflation adjusted price for a car was about 28K. In 1986 it was 33K. In 1996 it was 35K. In 2006 it was 40.5K and today over 50K. So an increase of +$22,000 over 50 years with a majority of the inflation over the last 25 years. I’d like that see the costs of insurance inflation adjusted over 50 years?

The majority of people retardiedly tie their identity to what they drive and take on way too much debt.

50k? My wife’s last car was a ‘24 Rav4 XLE and we paid 34k OTD. I recall spending months researching, negotiating and debating whether to get it or not. That’s the most I’ve ever spent on a car. A few days ago my wife came home and said her coworker paid 52k for a limited trim Rav4. I told her limited trim but unlimited stress.

Driving a 1925 Model T is the OT equivalent of dating one of the Dixie Chicks.

Added technology but how much due to government regulations?

That's not going to stop cylinder deactivation, turbo charging, CVTs, 48 air bags, safety sensors every 3rd square inch....there is no escaping the enshittification of new cars.
Go get a Toyota or Honda with a naturally aspirated engine from about 1995 to 2010 and you'll be good. But those are getting harder to find.

Vast majority.
I'm sure Toyota would sell you a simple pickup with a naturally aspirated port injected 4 cylinder, 5/6 speed manual, manual window and a vynl bench seat for about 20k.
But the government mandates require turbo charging, CVTs, turbos, a jillion "safety" sensors, particulate filters, etc.
New cars are shite. All of them. The 4runner you could get in 2020 that would go 300/400k with proper maintenance is a thing of the past.
At this point, electric cars present the simplest, most straightforward option. I haven't owned one, nor a hybrid, but my next commuter will likely be electric. They are relatively simple compared to the monstrosities our overbearing federal goverment has created for conventional ICE cars.
