The U.S. budget deficit edged lower for 2025 as record-setting tariff collections helped offset what also were unprecedented numbers for payments on the spiraling national debt, the Treasury Department announced Thursday.

In a year marked by a bruising trade war and high financing costs, the federal government managed to escape with a $1.78 trillion shortfall, some $41 billion, or 2.2%, less than in fiscal 2024.

So we’re still hemorrhaging, just 2.2% less?

Why is this even newsworthy, except to say that the Feds are still spending 97.8% as much as they did last year? That’s the headline.

It's still an improvement

What is killing us is we let it get to the point where the interest to service the interest on the debt is such a huge line item in the budget

Baby steps. I don't want to poo poo progress but we have a major spending problem when we're celebrating a 1.80 trillion dollar annual deficit as an accomplishment. Shame on us for ever letting it get to this point.

So fiscal year of 2025 is October 2024-Sept2025

The first 4 months are Bidens term and the last 8 are Trumps term.

We are actually netting about 300-400B more Feb-Sept2025 compared to the same time frame last year.
