Wash-sale rule

I understand the basics of the wash-sale rule, but I’m confused on what happened to me….
I had a stock for several years, bought anywhere from $1 up to $7. I was able to eventually get my cost basis down to $2.56 and it finally jumped up to $2.69 when I sold everything. Made maybe $100 off of it.
All of the shares above the $2.69 I sold at I’ve held for several years
Like an idiot I bought in again at $1.97 for 1000 shares 16 days after I sold the stock. So I spent about $1997 on it.
The stock is at $2.51 now.
But when I look at my portfolio it’s showing me at a cost basis of $4,429. And roughly a 42% loss.
How is this possible?

I think you’d have to wait 30+ days and not 16.
It essentially disallowed losses for shares that were bought higher than the 2.69 sell price.

because one or more of your lots was sold at a loss and thus it’s a wash sale event and the difference is the penalty

But what I’m confused about is how I put in $1997 and it’s showing I put in $4300+?

because the shares you bought were assigned a higher price

Got it. That sucks. I figured it’d be from the whole sale, not divided up by the lots I bought. Damn
Thanks

cost basis per share means nothing, forget you ever heard of it. Always know your lot values

Always sell lots in profit only if you’re looking to trim and rebuy quickly… hold the losses until you’re done with the name for good.
