Support for Windows 10 ends Oct 14. Will my home PC continue to work?

What are my best options? Will Windows Defender no longer work for me?
Older desktop PC, so if I have to get a new one, will get a laptop.

It'll give you the option to get the extended update coverage for an additional year. It's free.

It'll still work fine, as long as they keep extending the security updates you're all good.
ETA: but you have to take some action to get the updates for a year--

It’ll work and I’m not sure if additional support costs more or not. Windows defender would need extra settings to ensure security. Definitely have PC in “public network” security mode.
Really though, it’s a decade old. Maybe get a light OS like Ubuntu or sell it and pick up a replacement that meets w11 spec for $0-50 more and maybe $11 for a W11 license if not included.

Yes it will still work.
As long as you avoid clicking scammy emails and visiting sketchy websites there is not much to worry about. I still run windows 7 PCs. The end of support is more for businesses who really can't afford for their IT systems to be taken down by ransomware from employees doing dumb shite.

Windows 11 is not Windows ME. Just upgrade. You can apply cosmetic updates if you care that much for $15 (WindowBlinds on Steam).

There are few ways to get an older, unsupported desktop to upgrade to Windows 11, especially if it is already running Win10. We just completed our migration at work and I had about 20 stations that did not meet the requirements but I was able to get them to update to Windows 11.
Usually all that you need to do is download an ISO of Windows 11, mount it and then open a command prompt and change to the mounted drive. Then run server setup command. Example: d:\sources>setupprep.exe /product server
That should start Windows 11 setup and bypass all the TPM and security checks to allow you to install Windows 11 and allow you to keep your apps and settings.
Another way involves a few registry key edits and a reboot and then it will also ignore the requirements for install.
I ran into all of these issues in the last few months as we had to upgrade around 400+ stations to 11 to meet compliance standards before support ended for 10.

Yes. I know you can hack it to install. But last time we had a thread on this , it seemed you still could not get Win 11 updates at any rate. And of course that leaves you vulnerable to security threats.

The workstations upgraded using those methods have been pulling down updates and working just fine.

Possible, but he also got a notification asking him to upgrade 2 years ago, and likely ignored it because of whiners.
The browser he uses is more important than the OS for most of the dumb stuff that users are going to be infected with.
