The one we don’t run enough. Fake the wide screen hit the slot

Traditional screens don’t work vs a drop zone. Clemson ran a ton of man with QB pressure against us. UF is the only other team to really do much of that.

We will have to get teams out of drop coverage for these plays to re-appear. We could still implement some of the misdirection in other ways, though. But that wound require some creativity from Sloan.

Screens worked really well vs Ole Miss we just didn’t take advantage of them.

Maybe bubbles to the WRs. That’s not the same thing we are talking about here. A traditional jailbreak or middle screen requires inviting numbers forward, setting up blocks downfield, and creating a numbers mismatch to burn the defense for blitzing. When the defense drops 7 or 8 and isn’t pressing at the snap, these plays are completely useless. They tend to be slow-developing and will almost always be blown up.

I don’t think we ran a single traditional screen vs Ole Miss. We tried one or two early vs Tech, but they blew them up because they played that same drop 7 or 8 defense most of the game. You won’t see them again unless we play a team that plays more man and tries to pressure Nuss with 5 or 6.

It helps when you catch them on a blitz for sure but it isn’t necessary to execute one for a good gain.

It’s as much about man vs zone. You have to create a numbers advantage for the play to have any chance, and that requires numbers coming forward. If the defense isn’t committing at least 5 up front and playing man, then you have 4 or 5 players on the play side facing the LOS and watching it develop in front of them. They are going to attack the receiver before anything can be set up and blow up the play.

You do have the numbers regardless. You’re allowing the front 4 to take themselves out of the play

Carson Beck making all these deep throws makes me wish we could do this. He looks great so far.

Partially because we paid him a lot of money and he was hurt most of the season and missed games. Mostly because, while he was very versatile and solid, he doesn’t have elite speed.

The staff definitely would have kept him (they said this at the end of last season), but I don’t think they were willing to pay him the same NIL to stay, so he left to get it at Miami. We have a younger, cheaper version of him in Kyle Parker and they went after more speed, which we lacked last year.

Keeping Daniels wouldn’t help with the offensive issues we have this season.
