According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy and T.R. Sullivan, Ben Sheets has a torn flexor tendon in his elbow that might require surgery. There is some debate as to whether the Brewers would have to pay for the procedure. The Rangers and Sheets agreed to a two-year deal last week, but the physical threw a wrench into it. GM Jon Daniels says he's not optimistic at this point. The injury first surfaced late in the '08 season, but until Sheets' physical with the Rangers it was thought that rehab would be sufficient.

makes sense. There had to be a reason, injuries and all, that he wasnt picked up by someone yet

Not to mention the Brewers offered arb so whoever signs him gives up their first round draft pick to the Brewers.

CC and Sheets should have been 2 1st rounders but the FA formula was created while smoking dank and somehow Tex became more valuable than CC.

I guess the Brewers will have to pay for the procedure since the signing was pending a physical. I became a Brewers fan because of Sheets and Weeks, but now I'm just ready for both of them to bounce and be done with them

The news gets worse

quote:

1:56pm: ESPN's Jayson Stark says the surgery Sheets is considering has a standard 9-10 month recovery time, jeopardizing his 2009 season. Stark adds that "some teams that had pursued Sheets this winter seemed to be more concerned about his shoulder than his elbow."

Well I'm glad the Astros didn't sign him.

They probably will in the next 2 weeks now.

31 called me out in the LNST as an idiot because I said Sheets should take a 1 year deal for 5-6MM and prove that hes healthy and get his big contract next year.

There was a bit of sarcasm in there.

Of course, if Sheets doesn't play in '09, Hampton wins by default.

I cant see how this slipped past everyone and they just realized in the last week or two that he would need surgery. With arm issues being the biggest knock on Sheets, it seems like he would have spent all offseason taking physicals and having his arm examined routinely to prove to interested teams that he is ready. I dont see how the doctors missed it for the entire offseason and FA signing period.

edit: The Brewers even offered him arbitration. It seems that he would have to get the arm checked out and cleared before they would offer. How did the docs and experts miss that he probably needs surgery that will cause him to miss the entire season?

Exactly. Braves fans thought this when Pedro got injured in his first start last season at the Marlins in the 4th inning...then Hampton goes and 1-ups him by straining a pec during his pre-start warmups.

Never be surprised by the power of the Hamp.

Plus, if Hampton goes out there and starts 0-3 with a 7.22 ERA, and inactive Sheets probably wins the competition between the two.
