Anyone playing this? I played the original as a kid but did not get too far. Definitely less handholding than some modern games like Triangle Strategy but I am enjoying the challenge.

One of the only final fantasy’s I’ve never played. May be my next game if I ever finally finish EXP 33

Bought it for the switch. Plan to fire it up when I'm traveling.

Never played it when it came out back in the 90s so I'm looking forward to it.

Played the ever-loving hell out of this, back on the PSX. I'm only about 3 battles in. Those early fights where you have a bunch of Squires and Chemists are frustrating, but necessary evils.

Does it get better? It’s the only FF I haven’t been able to get into. The battles are just so slow, and the most exciting thing you can do is throw a rock.

It’s in my top 3 FF games.

You’re talking about early battles with the first 2 jobs out of a total of like 20 not including the specialized jobs for certain characters. Squire is basically your start for physical classes and chemists are starts for mages.

In short yes it gets way better than throwing rocks and potions

Ditto. It gets really fun as you open up the classes.

One of my favorite games of all time and IMO the best plot in any FF game.

I’m enjoying it so far, the voice acting is really good and the gameplay is just as addicting as it was back in the day. Fantastic update.

Got to the town with the slums, where the enemy gang have 2 proper archers & 2 black mages. Found out way too quickly that I'm underleveled at the moment. My only option is to grind some random battles and crank out everyone to around level 4.

Get you some archers and equip them with bows and get to the high ground asap. Black mages also do well.

Squires leveled to 2 or 4 opens up knights and archers. Chemists leveled to the same opens up blm and whm. I can’t remember the exact job level you need.

The worst spot in the game where you can be severely under leveled comes in act 2 and when you get there you’ll know it. I remember being 12 years old on my first playthrough and getting stuck there and having to grind a ton of levels for a team of lancers that could jump anywhere

Yeah, I have a WM and an Archer and all my squires are around Lv3 now. I almost beat that stage underleveled. Forgot to equip Phoenix Down skill for my Chemist, so Ramza died and timed out.

Ah, flashbacks to grinding by standing in a circle and throwing rocks at each other after the battle is basically won. While also waiting for the down enemies to time out.

Problem with grinding though is that the random battles scale with your level and your equipment does not.

Yeah, I need to get better about waiting for the enemy mobs to despawn so they can be looted.

I would always have 1 guy equipped with the Knights skill and everyone else with Steal as their secondary skills. Get down to one enemy, circle around them, steal heart so they dont attack and then speed break and power break until they have zero speed or strength. The enemy then gets a turn after ever 5 or so rounds. You just steal gil over and over and even if they counter they hit you for 1hp. You can max out a job per battle this way.

I went to the third battle of the game with maxed ninja for two handed monks, max summoners, etc.

Also once chapter 2 or 3 roll around and human enemies show up in random battles the scaling helps. You can either steal equipment or use a mediator to recruit and get weapons/armor from much later in the game very early

I'll have to try that. I've totally skipped over the Knight skills to this point, but I need to be seriously skilled up for that third battle.

Forgot about that. Yep, recruit them, strip their gear, dismiss them.

Alternatively, you can steal everything (weapon first), kill them, and hope you get an ability from the crystal that drops.

I was trying to avoid buying this since I don't need another game in the log; but I think I have to now.

There was a way I remember to basically max out a class in one battle. It’s a specific setup though. Need to find a map that has yellow chocobos, one character you want to level a job up with no weapon with punch for an attack and 2 or 3 characters with power break.

Basically kill everything but the chocobo, power break it as much as possible, then surround it on all 4 sides. You can then just punch it with the characters you want to level up for max job points and all it can do is attack you for 1 hp or heal. When you get it to critical hp it will pretty much only heal. Takes some time but pretty effective for breaking the game

ETA - the chocobo heal heals itself and all 4 sides so you won’t ever need to heal your guys

From Reddit:

quote:

My suggestions, I've played through the game a lot. This is from the first random battle; given you are a few hours in its not completely relevant.

What I do is I have everyone start as Squire, blitz through your first fights until you can learn the Accumulate skill. This is a skill you can use on every turn when you are not defending, it will raise your physical attack power by 1 each time you use it and yields full JP. Use it, a lot. Secondly get the "Gained JP Up" passive and equip it immediately. At this point you can swap jobs if you so wish.

I like to continue with 3 squires, and swap 2 to chemists. When a character earns JP, a small percentage of that classes JP is carried over to every other character on the battlefield. If you have more of a similar class using abilities, they will all get JP at a faster rate. Always set the 'Basic Skill' as your secondary ability and spam Accumulate. Fight in the grasslands area and always leave a Goblin for last. They have very low movement and can be easily kited. Kill everyone but the Goblin and spread your party out, spamming JP constantly, rake in that JP.

That will subsequently give you lots of exp (10 per) and lots of JP (more per each level of class) and let you learn abilities and level up classes quickly. Early on I recommend using the Knight and Monk classes as physical damage is better in the earlier levels then magic. If you're feeling like an overachiever, you can also level up Archer/Thief to 4 and then Geomancer to 2 and have an early Ninja. The 2 swords ability will carry you far in the early game.

General battle tips is to always focus fire down targets. If it coems into your range, have everyone wail on it. As the story moves on and more AE magic comes into play you'll have to spread out more. But by then you should also be mixing in your own ranged classes (guns are great!).
