Walker LA. Identified doveweed in massive amounts in my Bermuda hopefully taking over centipede yard. This is surprising because it’s a well drained area , and have maintained yard season round with nitrogen application and mowed at 1.5” at least 1 x week. I noticed the doveweed purple flowering this past week after the several days of rain. Last week I did apply dithiopyr fall pre emergent. At this point in the year, do I just wait and see and hope the winter kills it off? It doesn’t look terrible mowed because it’s full and green, but it’s definitely not a turf grass that I’m wanting. Thanks.

Can you pull it? It comes up really easy.

I velcroed one of these to my lawn mower and rip out anything as I see it. Last week there were about a dozen small patches of dove weed.

A frost should kill it but that likely won't happen until November or December. Since it is aggressive at killing good grass i would consider a good selective herbicide. Celsius WG works well in my experience but usually takes two applications two weeks apart. Since it's kind of a waxy blade a surfactant would help or add some dawn in the blue bottle with the duck on the label.

Celsius kills the shite out of it. Once sprayed it's going to take over a week before you see a difference. Will go downhill quickly after that. I have the instructions on my site. And I think the links for the small packets

Doveweed is an annual summer weed it will die with winter. You can kill it post-emergent with Celsius herbicide but it will return next year as the seeds are there. To mitigate its proliferation you need to apply Specticle pre-emergent herbicide next spring, around mid- to late April before the seeds germinate at a soil temperture near 70 F. With a wet summer a second application might be required in late July-early August. Dimension or Prodiamine pre-emergent herbicides will not work with Doveweed.

Specticle Flo is expensive upfront, near $300 for a 18 oz bottle. But it should last 3 or 4 years for 10,000 square foot lawn with 2 or 3 applications per year when applied at the labeled rate. Cost should equate to about $3 per 1000 sq ft or $30 for 10,000 sq ft of lawn - which in the grand scheme is not terribly expensive.

Atrazine, Celsius, Weed-Free-Zone, or any other herbicide with 2,4-D will kill it.

Specticle Flo is supposed to be very effective against doveweed. So I don't think this is true. I personally haven't used the stuff, so I don't have first hand experience.

Seems like Doveweed pops up very late in the summer. Probably works for it but have to time it correctly.
