Draft success

Had been seeing a lot of bitching about the Saints drafting, and questions/comments about needing to purge the scouting department, why does Mickey still have a job, why trade players for picks, we'll just waste the picks, etc., etc., etc. Made me curious about the "success" of the scouting department in preparing the decision makers. Pro Football reference has a cool feature where you can see the last year a player was under contract.
So, I looked at the 2017 - 2022 drafts and added the number of players drafted by a team and compared to the number of players still under contract (with any team). And it looks like the front office is not that bad (outside of the 1st round) and finding players.
Bal - 60.7%
Kan - 60.0%
Buf - 55.6%
NOR - 52.9%
TAM - 52.3%
Dal - 49.1%
Sea - 49.0%
NYJ - 48.9%
Jax - 46.9%
LAR - 45.3%
Ind - 45.3%
Phi - 45.2%
SFO - 44.9%
Hou - 43.9%
Atl - 42.9%
Mia - 41.9%
GNB - 41.4%
Pit - 41.3%
NYG - 40.8%
Chi - 40.5%
Min - 38.8%
LAC - 38.6%
Ten - 38.1%
Det - 37.5%
Den - 35.8%
Car - 34.8%
Cin - 32.7%
Cle - 32.0%
Was - 31.5%
LVR - 29.8%
NWE - 27.5%
Ari - 26.7%
Again, this is the success of the teams identifying players to draft. I am not going to spend the time to determine what players are still with their drafted teams, so people like Devenport, Hendrickson, Baun... still count towards the Saints success at drafting.

Just thought this was interesting information that I was able to quickly gather, and probably why the team still hangs on to a lot of their internal scouts.

So basically if Zion goes to Milwaukee in 2 seasons and is successful there, the Pels get credit for a good draft……

These teams draft with 30-40% more picks, so total numbers of hits is lower. Always easy to manipulate statistics. We traded 3 picks for Trautman, 3 for Baun, and 3 for Olave. So thats 9 picks, that counts for 3. We kinda hit on 1 for broken down, no contested catch, dive on the ground Olave. Just look at the Probowl rosters, or any player you would give a second contract to who is young. We probly will give a second contract to someone ,rather than admit we were wrong. (Who decided to give Ruiz a second contract)

The problem most have is that our high level picks have been guys we’ve traded capital for and have busted. Add on that our most successful picks we’ve let walk and you get the current roster disaster.
We don’t do a bad drafting guys. We do a poor job of managing roster construction, and we do a bad job of identifying top end talent.

little bit of both. Have to change the Personnel Department. Add Young Personnel people

Including 2017 is cherry picking. That's an all time great draft that will likely never be repeated by the Saints. Everything after that has been bad.

They get credit for identifying a NFL caliber player. If you want to take the time to track down each team's success of drafting AND retaining players, feel free. I was just curious because of the constant, "why bothering trading for draft picks, Saints don't draft well...", so I looked it up and downloaded some excel sheets.

The first sentence of the quote was sort of my point. They continue to find players that can play at some level in the league, they just can't seem to hold onto them for a variety of reasons.

I included 2017 because in 2026 the number of players still in the league drops significantly, from 27.7% of 2017 to 18.6% for 2016.
But, for sake of discussion, dropping 2017 drops the Saints percentage from 52.9% to 48.1%, which puts them at 10th. Ranking 10th is still better, and if the team had the rest of the staff to develop and put people in the right spots; we may not be looking at the shite we see on the field.
