What ya got on the pedal board?

(you old “I just plug into my amp guys need not reply)

Lots of us, even when we bring an amp and cab, still run to FOH. I am doing all indoor shows IEM now and bring the Ampeg head and cab out for outdoor shows.

Right now I’m running the following and it’s amazing:

Origin Effects Cali76 Bass Compressor>Line 6 HX One>Darkglass Vintage Microtubes>Sansamp Bass Driver DI v2>Sushibox Finally tube DI

I have a Sushibox SBVT II coming tomorrow. It is basically the front end of my Ampeg heads in a box. It could replace the Sansamp and Finally.

I have two different setups:
1. Valeton GP 200. It's a amp/cab modeler. It's cheap but portable and gets the job done.

I use this rig for most basic shows where I only need a couple tones and I'm not asked to play much of anything as a lead guitarist. Rhythm guitar only plugged directly into a PA system with minimal fuss.

2. Fender Hot Rod Deluxe on the clean channel with a pedal board plugged into it. Signal chain goes tuner, compressor, EHX glove, EXH phaser, Behringer vintage analog delay, Komet CODA overdrive, boss super chorus, rougarou banshee reverb

So, I use this second rig because it can do several things for me: I can get great clean tones with a ton of reverb, I can create ping ponging delays reminiscent of U2 or Angels & Airwaves, I can play impressive solos by using the phaser in part as a boost, I can use the chorus to get 80's tones, and I have two completely different drive tones at my disposal with the Glove providing cranked Marshall style classic rock distortion and the CODA giving me a lighter overdrive perfect for blues or country.

So, as you can see, the second rig has been put together to be far more versatile. I used that rig for years to play classic rock cover band gigs. The second rig is more stripped down and mission-specific, giving me exactly what I need for most shows and nothing else.

I have a third board that I don't really use anymore that had the blues driver on it, lol

It’s hard to find a guitar players board that doesn’t have either a Blues Driver or a Tube Screamer on it.

Tube screamers sound best when they’re essentially cranking the drive channel on an amp for a strat. I don’t play strats, and I don’t use my drive channel. Thus, no tube screamer.

I'll be the first to crack open the digital can.

I am running a Quad Cortex and it covers 95% of my needs. I also have a Walrus Audio Fable, Matthews Effects Technician, and Eventide H9 Max in the FX loop, which can cover any remaining 5% when needed.

I do miss the thrill of chasing new pedals and constructing a pedalboard and trying "new" stuff, but for gigging....it can't be beat.

I have too many pedals and subsequently an ever evolving pedalboard.

My newest pursuit is fuzz pedals and man, what an insane rabbit hole in which to fall. Not only do you have a seemingly endless variety of classic circuits (fuzz faces, tone benders, muffs), you have inconsistency from unit to unit in many of those circuits, especially those that use Ge transistors. I see now why Eric Johnson says he buys every vintage Fuzz Face he comes across and then resells 95 percent of them for not making the cut.

My favorite fuzz pedals this week (LOL) are VERY modified triangle and ram's head clones built by friends; an AMZ Tweed Stack kit built by a friend; and the actual TB Mark 1.5 clone seen and heard in this video ... 66 Bender by Manlay Sound (Spain)

My "must have" effect is delay (atop the amp, always on) and my go-tos are a Source Audio Collider or the TC Electronic Flashback for my high gain amp. I have a Boss Waza Craft version of the DM-2 that is stellar with my old Fender combo.

My favorite "out in front" pedals are the Source Audio Spectrum for envelope filtering (I can't use a pedal wah after my left heel was surgically reconstructed); and the Boss Super Phaser PH-2 for the occasional swirlywhirl.

And right after I posted, USPS delivers two more VERY modified versions of classic Nashville dirt circuits (ODR-1 and Mostortion) from one of my pedal builder buds. Christmas in September.

TC Electronic Polytune3
Dunlop JC95 Wah
Boss SD1
MXR Phase95
Walrus Slo
OBNE DarkStar
Catalinbread Belle Epoch
Catalinbread Echorec

Both my Catalinbread pedals have issues with turning on slowly for some reason. I am thinking of replacing them with a Strymon EC-1.

Was gonna ask what you thought about the Belle Epoch. There seem to be a lot of those type pedals on the market now like the

Chasetone Secret Preamp
Xotic EP
Strymon Deco
JPTR FX Jive
SHO
J Rocket APE
Retro Reel on Line6
Catalinbread has more than a few versions.

Just always on tone enhancers. That could be a separate discussion. What is your secret sauce effect.

It's probably my favorite pedal, though the phase95 is now a very close second. The modulation and the random warble on the repeats is a thing of beauty to my ears. I am not sure if maybe they had a bad board batch because I got them around the same time frame, but both Catalinbread pedals hesitate when I turn them on. It takes a while for the LED to come on as well as the audio to actually start coming out of those two pedals.

That Strymon EC-1 sounds amazing and would make a great replacement. It can even emulate tape splicing sounds. It's on the pricey side though.

That’s weird. It’s like a tube pedal or amp having to warm up but it doesn’t have a tube.

The Strymon stuff is really good. We had a fill in guitar player one night and most of his board was Strymon. He had a totally unique tone unlike anyone I’ve heard live. It was really cool.

Yea I am not sure why. They only recently both started doing that.
