I know some will say OJ, 9/11, Obama, Trump, Etc.

I’d say 2013 around the time of Trayvon Martin.

Obama came out before the trial and made it a racial trial saying if he had a son he’d look like Trayvon.

Subsequently at that time, the economy was still crap for the working class. Anti-establishment sentiment was growing. We were still engaged in nation building. The hyper politicization skyrocketed after Obama’s 2nd reelection especially in Academia& government. Social media became an absolute monster too around this time.

I vote 2013 was the year that society went to crap.

9/11 kind of started it. Obama + Trump + COVID + social media + SSRIs poured gas all over everything.

It's not, social media amplifies all this. Most people are just going about their business

Bush II going into Iraq.

Almost everything flows back to that to some degree.

Election of Obama. People voted for him because he portrayed himself as a great uniter. He in fact was a great divider that wanted to fundamentally change America.

When our leaders told America it was okay to act uncivilized towards and to hate those with opposing views, so like 2008 or so

You started the thread with a question and ended it in the same OP with the ultimate answer. Grand opening, grand closing!

I’m going to go with 2012 being the beginning of the downfall of society. Ironically you can trace a line directly to the rise of social media with that year

Yes, but I'd actually argue it's the internet as a whole. I just don't think we are biologically wired to have instant communication with billions of people.

That fits with OPs timeline. Social media really hit the afterburners in the 2010s.

I'm with Dr. Jonathan Haidt. We need to start by banning phones in schools

2012-2015 before Trump came along there was a lot of rift.

Trump was the first republican to bring Boxing gloves to the ring. Trump in 2016 disavowed Bush/Iraq and I remember being completely shocked how angry conservatives were at the establishment

Racism ratcheted up because of Obama.

We are still paying the price for him.
