The origin of certain last names is fascinating

Take the name Singletary for example. Why are there no Double, Triple, or Quadrupletarys? Where did this name come from? What does Singletary mean?
This is a thought provoking inquiry that I think should lighten up the solemn mood that has presided over this board for quite some time. What are other names whose origins you are curious about?

I'm more interested in the British Royal Family having no surname.

They think they’re above it. Bloody prats, that lot.

They were Hanovers until it became inexpedient during WWI.

Windsor-Mountbatten
It's available as a surname... but they aren't required to actually have one. Based on my limited googling of the matter.

I thought that's the one they settled on a few years back.

One of the high-ranking officers in the Royal Navy was named Battenburg.
When the war started, the family changed it to Mountbatten.

Back in the 1980s, there was a Scottish racing driver, who was the son of the Earl of Dumfries. He called himself Johnny Dumfries. His title was the Marquess of Bute.
Now, he's the Earl of Dumfries, and calls himself John Bute.
No idea why.

I will never understand their ways. Neat anecdote- never knew it.

You probably weren't paying much attention to F1 racing.

No. I'm glad you were though and had something neat to share. I love interesting tidbits like that!

I think they’re all from down that road.
