First Masters Trip - Stay and Play

Driving in from Louisiana on Monday for the Wednesday practice round. I’m planning to stay 1–2 hours from Augusta—leaning toward Aiken, Columbia, or possibly the Atlanta side.
For those who’ve done it: when do public courses in the area typically open tee times for Masters week, and is it tough to land a time? Ideally I’d play Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning, and maybe Tuesday afternoon. First trip to the Masters—not chasing bucket-list tracks, just looking for solid, reasonably priced courses to enjoy with the boys.
I’ve heard good things about Aiken Golf Club, Fort Gordon’s Eisenhower, Cherokee Run, Oconee for value and conditions. Any other courses or areas to stay within an easy drive that usually have availability that week would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Cherokee Run is a fun track. There’s also Ashton Hills in Covington, GA (not far from Cherokee Run) that’s also a good spot. Enjoy Augusta National. There’s truly nothing like it.

Call Savannah Lakes Village.

I made the trip for the Monday practice round in 2024. I had the same issue of wanting to firm up tee times well in advance of the trip. After researching a ton of courses, we chose to play two RTJ Trail courses and then drive to a VRBO place in Harlem, GA about 25 minutes from Augusta.
If you are not chasing a specific course in GA, then hitting two courses in AL on the way works pretty well, especially if you want to play 36 on Tuesday.
I’d recommend finding a place closer to Augusta to stay so you are not wasting so much time driving on the day you attend.

Everything golf in Aiken will be pretty expensive masters week regardless but Palmetto and Aiken Golf club are awesome. Old Taccoa would be an awesome one too if you want to swing that far north.
Aiken the town is the place to stay. Best restaurants and bars, very cool town and only 25 mins away. Lots of masters folks there but never feels crowded, even on the weekend. Tons of golf all around there.
You said no bucket list but Tree Farm, Old Barnwell and Sage Valley will also let you on if you call early enough. Will likely be after January. All those are going to be $$$ but obviously worth it.

Reynolds Lake Oconee between Atlanta and Augusta. Rented a house next door to a house the Manning Clan had rented for Masters week. (It was Reynolds Plantation at that time - 2007.). Longish drive to Augusta on the days we watched golf, but the golf courses were great. Bernard Langer's sister-in-law was the cart girl at one of the courses.

I went last year for the first time and we stayed in Beaufort, SC. We were 1.5 hours from Augusta and the town is beautiful and historic. We did not play golf. You will love the Masters.

15-20 minutes from I-20 and the golf courses will be in elite condition too. About 1.5 hours to Augusta from there.

We did this in 2023. Stayed in a cabin on the lake and played both courses on Sunday/Monday. We did the RTJ course in Opelika on the way Saturday, then played in Birmingham on Wednesday afternoon to break up the drive back home. Savannah Lakes didn't jack up the rates too much that week and the courses were both nice.
In 2022, we did East Lake in Atlanta and then Palmetto in Aiken. Both are expensive, but worth it, IMO.
