Tried for the snapper last weekend in 7 mile rigs out of Venice.

The sharks did not even give us a chance. We managed to get a few in the boat but they were taxing us bad. I mean it was like the second we hooked up, instantly got taxed. This is getting out of control.

I guess we will try next season for them.

That said, has anyone ever fished the artificial reefs LDWF put out there and are they worth it to fish? The rigs have been reliable but the sharks are so bad.

We did really good Friday and Saturday out of Venice. We only had one spot where the sharks started getting on us and we just moved. My kid thought it was the coolest thing ever to catch sharks

It's stupid in the SMI and EI blocks. Any standing platform is unfishable. We have moved over to hard bottom and a few cut off platforms where we can catch some fish without the nasty bastards cleaning us out.

We fished the flat out of south pass but i think we were too late. No current = no fish there.

Do you absolutely need a spot lock when you fish the hard bottoms? i know it makes it easier. I see the guides do it all the time without the spotlock but I lack their expertise.

Those guides might be doing it with a joystick/spotlock setup instead of a trolling motor, seems almost impossible to try to hold a spot without one or the other.

Sharks at 7 miles had been hit or miss for us. Seems the more boats there the less problems we have, guessing that helps thin them out a little.

Nope I don't use it. I try to keep my stern into the sea and bump the engines in reverse. Seems to work well for me. Granted, I dont go out if the seas are over 2ft which makes it easy. ]

My boat has the joystick/lock button but I find it uses way too much throttle at times, and I think I can hold it better myself.

They were bad at the 7 mile rigs last weekend.

12 mile rigs were even worse.

Curious what the water conditions were like? Playing around with RipCharts this morning and it looks like 7 mile isn't too far from being in blue water. Cognac and BP109 look like they should definitely be blue.

It was blue. Really pretty out there

I went out a few times this year. Out of Fourchon and out of Sabine pass

Each time after catching a few we started to get absolutely wrecked by the sharks at the close rigs.

Sabine was especially bad. On two different spec trips we were getting hammered by them at the jetties

Did not matter last week. Fished lightning, 109 and Cognac for AJs. All were blue. All were totally full of sharks. We even had sharks circling our boat within minutes of stopping to deep drop way out in open water 800'+ deep. They're literally everywhere.

I've noticed more and more that the sharks are taking the leads before the bait. Puglia's and Professional are consistently out of deep drop leads shortly after they restock, so I presume many are having the same problems.

We've fished the LDWF reefs in WD, ST, BM and GI blocks almost since they were placed. I find they produce better early in the season with less sharks. We also have fished some of the CCA reefs as well, but they are a much smaller footprint than a rig jacket that has been placed on its side.

Strikelines and other fishing charts are very helpful, but they're no longer a secret and these 'spots' are all heavily fished. We know the commercial guys hammer the reefs in ST weeks before recreational snapper season opens.

Louisiana needs to adopt the Alabama artificial reef program. It would piss off the trawl boats, but at some point, I don't give a shite.

We fished the 7 mile rigs saturday. About 5 boats out there and I didn't see 1 fished pulled up. I finally made a move to about 200' of water and caught our limit.

The water at the 7 miles was beautiful.

Did you fish a rig in the 200’?
