Food peeps,

just bought the 18" Kamado Joe from Lowes @ $799.

is it me or is that just an insane price for this unit?

picking up tomorrow. very excited for this fall season and cooking on the new red guy.

anyone have tips, advice, or experience here? not new to grilling or smoking, but this is my first ceramic of my own.

That's what I have and I enjoy using it alot

$799 is a typical price for a Classic 1.

Personally I don't think the Classic 2 is worth the extra cost for the air hinge and kontrol vent upgrades

thank you. it's by far the cheapest ceramic out there. that said, i find the build quality pretty solid. looking forward to it. i think the versatility is great and def has the potential to take a deep dive into the accessories and little tricks that you can do on this device. divide and conquer lol

I've found Smoking Dad Bbq's YouTube channel very helpful in learning how to use my Kamado Joe properly without too much trial and error

Pork Butts

*On his channel, he is now promoting Big Green Egg (sponsored) but has a ton of Kamado Joe Videos

Edit: his "double indirect" method involves using a pizza stone (added accessory). It mimics the Slo roller that is included in the Classic 3 series . I've bee using this technique and it seems to work well

Get yourself a basket for the coals. You can take out the metal grate with the holes when you use the basket. Before I got the basket I had issues with ash clogging up that grate and causing temp fluctuations on long cooks.
Coal Basket this one is $50. They range from $30 to the namebrand Ash Kicker at $90.

The big KJ accessories are the pizza and rotisserie attachments. I do not recommend the pizza one unless you find it at a deep discount. The rotisserie is worth it but make sure you get the additional basket. My favorite way to make wings. I don’t have the Slo-roller so I cannot speak on that.

I second the recommendation above about the Smoking Dad YouTube channel. He is the best resource for techniques on cooking on a KJ. Not so much recipes because he pretty much only cooked brisket and pork shoulders repeatedly to update his techniques. Make sure to check the dates because he was constantly updating his favorite techniques.

I would also add that a wireless thermometer is a necessity for long cooks- especially overnight cooks where you want to be alerted if something gets out of line, but not necessarily be sitting around it all day or night
From my experience, once you get your temp dialed in, KJ's will hold them for a very long time

For lump charcoal, I find Academy Sports has the best selection and pricing

I find that the kingsford professional available at Costco works extremely well in my kamado. I have the small one.

For $300 more at Costco you could have the Weber Kamado that is 24”. Light weight. Works great. Burns both briquettes or lump.

I’m sure the Kamado Joe is a great grill, but that is too small for me. Enjoy. You’ll cook some great food.

My bad. You’re right. I was looking at the wrong grill that was metal and not ceramic.
