The Smashing Machine reviews: “A career-best performance for Dwayne Johnson”

Early critic reviews are solid. (Not social media paid hype reviews.)
quote:
The Rock is putting everything into making 'The Smashing Machine' a film that is not only spectacular, but also moving.
quote:
The indie package wrapped around Dwayne Johnson by Benny Safdie ensures The Smashing Machine gives the wrestler-turned-star-turned-actor his dream Hollywood reinvention.
quote:
A well-performed, empathetic portrait of a man on his own personal precipice, this is an examination of sacrifice and disappointment brought to life mostly through the gravitas of Dwayne Johnson.
quote:
Beyond the regular crunch of fist on bone, The Smashing Machine is an unexpectedly gentle, soulful character study that has Johnson undercutting his crowd-pleasing ‘The Rock’ persona with vulnerability and boyish uncertainty.
quote:
Johnson disappears into the role of Mark Kerr. Hard-hitting and heartfelt... a career-best performance that anchors the entire film.
quote:
It's difficult to recall another time when the actor has been so outwardly vulnerable on screen. You often forget it's Johnson at all, in part due to the prosthetics behind which he is subtly masked, but also because he is so emotionally transformed.
Good for Rock. He’s shown in Be Cool and Pain and Gain he can act when he wants to, he just always chose the easy action paychecks. Glad he’s actually trying again.

good for him. He lost 60 lbs and looks great and wants to do more serious roles.

People were saying he lost weight for the role but he looks jacked in the trailers so I think the weight loss is an actual health issue that happened after filming.

I like a lot(not all) of his action movies. Wish he would have done more crime thrillers like Faster.

it isn’t. He specifically said he lost weight for the role
His normal weight is 300. You would look how he did in this film at 240

I love Faster. There’s not really a plot, but him just being a revenge-seeking badass was a lot of fun.

The Rock hasn't been off the gear in at least 2 decades.

have you seen the pictures of him since the role? he is a lot smaller than he is in this trailer. So if he "lost weight for the role" he mustve decided to lose more after the role was done.

I’m sorry, I just can’t with the Rock. He’s such a pretentious douche.
I saw a clip where the movie got a standing ovation and he was crying, couldn’t stop looking around saying thank you as if it was all him. No acknowledgement to Emily Blunt who was standing right next to him. Maybe they were clapping for the movie not you clown.
He’s an egotistical frick, I used to like him but not anymore. It’s all about him.
That said, movie does look good.

That now famous picture where he looks tiny was just one from the weekend. There is another where he still looks jacked albeit a bit leaner.
Here are others.
Looks like he’s just not bulking anymore but still more jacked than 99.9% of people which is probably smart given he’s in his 50s.
That blue shirt just cut like a tent.

If A24 does this as well as Iron Claw it should be great.

The guy playing Bas Rutten should get a supporting nom.
