A) i see where they can go thru your belly button which makes me want to throw up (super sensitive belly button). Or they can make an incision to repair yhe hernia. Any advice on which approach is better?
B). How soon would i be able to drive to work, walk in and do just computer work?
C) is down time longer if by chance i have one on right side and left?
Man, i dont have time to be out for this

Had it done 2 years ago - left side. Robotic surgery. 3 small incisions on either side of your navel to insert the camera & instruments. Good to drive & walk the following day after the anesthesia wears off. Back at the fitness center lifting weights 2 weeks later.
Piece of cake surgery with no complications. They check the other side while inside and repair it at the same time if the surgeon sees an impending inguinal hernia on the other side, if necessary.

A) not familiar with umbilical approach. I had bilateral repairs at separate times. One with mesh. One without.
B) I drove a short distance the following day, but that wasn't very bright. Didn't need pain meds after first day. Walking within 3 days and back to work. My work didn't involve any labor and mostly at desk. Increased walking to light running and did 10k about 6weeks out.
C)Doing both at same time might slow recovery a little, but would be my choice. Recovery time will also be effected by how large the hernias are. Mine was small to moderate in one side and very small on other. Don't recall much difference in recovery. Both were done over 20 years ago and haven't had issues since.

Did you have to modify any activities?

Not really. I was never a heavy weight lifter, but became more conscientious of not pushing my limits. I still lift light to tone. I increased my running for years after. I'm slowing down now, but it's age and nothing to do with hernia surgery.

I had the same procedure about 7 years ago.
This was from my Doc:
Eat light the day before. Don't want to be straining on the toilet the next day.
Eat light, easily digestible food for the next few days. Keep a bottle of laxative handy just in case.
I was up and walking the next day. Took the pain meds for one day and then I went to an OTC pain reliever for the next few days.
You will need to take off work for a good week.
Doc said no lifting anything over 5lbs for about 3 weeks.
I can no longer lift heavy, I know when I hit the limit because I will get a burning sensation where I had the mesh implant. So watch for that.
A hernia is not to be taken lightly. It can choke off your intestines and burst causing you to 'poison' yourself.
Yep, it ain't fun getting older but it beats the alternative.

I had an umbilical hernia repaired earlier this year. It was a manual repair, so no robot and no mesh.
The surgery itself was quick.
Between not being able to cough or sneeze and being constipated from the pain meds, the first three days after surgery were kind of a bitch. I couldn't sleep on my side. When I walked, I had to shuffle my feet like an old man.
Couldn't lift anything over 20 pounds for 6 weeks. And when I finally got back in the gym, I dropped the weights way down. The first week was 50% of my working max weights. I increased incrementally from there.
But I cannot stress enough; do not lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk until the doctor clears you.

I found out that I have a right inguinal hernia about 10 years ago during physical.
I haven’t felt it so just not worrying about it for now.
