Brian Kelly quote I read today about our current roster (The Athletic)

“That’s why I’ve said publicly this is the best roster we’ve had,” Kelly says. “I didn’t say that this is a team that’s going to beat Alabama and Georgia. We think that we have a roster, though, that can compete with anybody in the country. Now we got to go prove it.”
Sounds like he’s already hedging his bets on how good this team can be. LSU is good enough to compete but not good enough to win a NC. I’m happy we’ll be improved but how long will it take to get to a NC caliber roster?

I think it's time to be brutally honest and that CBK has been afforded every opportunity to be successful. If he can't do it with this roster, coaching budget, facilities, talent rich state, then he can't do it.
Simple as that.

I mean to be fair, we have had multiple rosters that were talented enough to beat Bama and didn't. See 1/9/12 and 2012, 2014, 2016 & 2017. Now that was under Miles and Coach O. Okay well 2023 we had a team that could've beaten Saban and Alabama with the offense we had but we had a defense that couldn't stop anybody.
So I don't think its necessarily hedging his bets but hes being realistic. This is the most talented team hes had but now they have to go and prove it on the field. He is not going to be given any grace period if he has another year where we miss the playoff and he knows that but talent on paper is only good for the offseason. Now its about the product and execution on the field that matters. He did his job assembling the team now its on the team to execute.

I really don't think he is the answer. But I can't say who would have been better. O had to go
Hope be proves me wrong. He just seems soft to me

He's right, it is the best overall roster he's ever had - especially on defense. I have no problem with him saying it, it's true. Time to make the playoffs. LFG.

If he really said that, that’s annoying. Low energy as hell. You’ve been the head coach for four years and you have every ability to recruit at that level at LSU.

Two things can be true…this could be (and is) the best roster he’s had at LSU. But they still might not be a good enough “team” to win it all.
However from what I have seen and evaluated this offseason, this is the best roster and team he’s had. They are more than capable of wining it all. If they don’t, it will be because of coaching and/or pivotal injuries.

I hear you. I would be lying if I said I think he is the answer. But who were you going to get? And now who are going to go get if hes not the Coach? This isn't like twenty years ago where there were a bunch of young up and coming Coaches to hand the program to. I honestly couldn't tell you who I would want leading this program right now. And at the time the only other Coach would have been Lincoln Riley and we all know that 2023 would have been the exact same if not worse if Riley was the Coach. He doesn't coach defense.
So again, I don't know that he is the answer but what I do know is that he was probably the best Coach Woodward could have gotten at that time. Hopefully he falls in the line of the last 3 Coaches who Coached here and won the Championship but only time will tell.

That’s not the way the game works. With only a 12 game regular season to work with, the margin for error is small. Yet, you’re dealing with college kids and intangibles happen.
A coach cannot manage every single variable that affects the outcome of a game. So many things that can influence the outcome of a game are more like a dice roll. Not every outcome is 100% due to coaching or even player performance.
How many times have the most loaded college teams not won a natty, only to have it happen under the same coach during a subsequent year?
If you have a good coach that even almost gets there - that’s hard to find. You have to hang in there with these rare finds. It took Kirby Smart until his 6th year, and that guy was pumping out NFL talent. Then after 2 in a row, he’s gone 0-2.
If Kelly shows improvement, he still stays.

The next great coach is who you’d get. He is out there. The trick is evaluating them and knowing which one. When Saban was hired he was greeted by widespread skepticism by LSU fans. “His assistant coaches didn’t like him. Almost none of them followed him to LSU”. But Mark Emmertt had evaluated him, and Emmertt is no fool.

BK’s teams lack the physicality needed to win consistently in the SEC. I’m just not sure he has what it takes as a coach to teach it and demand it.

In the SEC, under the leadership of a man from Massachusetts who can’t even win a season opener? Probably never.

quote:If you don’t like Brian Kelly, that’s how you would hear it. To me, I hear him saying that just because we have a talented roster does not mean that we are owed anything. Talented rosters flop all the time, and he’s saying to his team here that things aren’t just going to be handed to them because they’re a good team.
Sounds like he’s already hedging his bets on how good this team can be.

He’s had an egg on his face for the last few years. He’s just tempering his coach talk finally

Yeah all he said was basically those teams are stacked too as is LSU...and that we have a legit chance. There are no guarantees no matter what any coach says
