US National Guard troops patrolling the streets of Washington DC as part of what President Donald Trump said was his crackdown on crime will begin carrying weapons on Sunday night, two officials said.

The exact number of troops who would carry their weapons was fluid. Still, they will either carry their M17 pistols or M4 rifles, according to the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Hundreds of unarmed National Guard troops have been in Washington's streets for the past two weeks after Trump declared a crime emergency in the district. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last week authorized the troops to carry weapons.

No logical reason they shouldn't.

This. What have they been holding while they patrol DC? Kazoos?

I don't think they had weapons issued? It's not uncommon...

Most of the time when deployed they don’t carry.

Dealing with armed thugs though, I think they should.

After Hurricane Andrew, Florida Guard carried pistols and rifles to keep the trash people in line.

A lot of these guys are young kids with minimal training outside of boot camp and what training they did have was geared towards combat, not policing. It probably took a couple weeks to identify capable soldiers and give them the proper training needed to carry loaded weapons on the street while in a position of authority.

You sure about that?

but for the U.S. Army National Guard, the average age for enlisted members is around 30.4 years and for officers is 39.2 years as of 2023

My point stands. I don’t know the real reason why they’re just know getting weapons in DC because I’m not involved. But my theory is as good as any.

There is no violation of Posse Comitatus act here. DC is federal land for one and the troops are under Title 32 state orders from other governors. It’s kind of a loophole because these guys are under state orders at the request of the President but legally there’s nothing wrong here.

I'm a big Trump supporter but I'm also retired Army and this is NOT a good idea.

Mostly because none of these guys are trained to be law enforcement. That's not a knock on the Army guys. It's just not their specialty.

Why are you acting like an OG poster? It's a little disproportionate for someone who has only been here for 6 months.

Whose alter are you?

Because I challenged him and asked a question?

People were asking why they weren’t already armed. I posited a reasonable reason why. You’re welcome to join the discussion if you’d like.

No, it's you... Focus.

I took a seven-year ban one time and had to lurk. I'm just trying to figure out who you really are.

peace.
