When my pump starts first thing in the morning, it primes and pumps fine for about 30 seconds, then loses prime. The pump still runs, but there is no water pumping through the system.

....not sure if that makes sense, but that's the best I can explain it.

Anyone have suggestions on a repair guy in the Covington area that could tackle this? Thanks for any help.

I’ve used Keith at North Shore Pool before when I bought a house with a pool that needed some work. He replaced a skimmer and a pump, but they also do repair work.

Tropical pool services… Dan Ulfers

He’s got a good team. He might even show up himself.

Not trying to offend if you’ve tried these things, so if you have, please ignore.

Several factors to check before calling someone:

Gasket on pump lid may be worn out and sucking air.

The little tab at the bottom of your skimmer may have inadvertently moved and closed off the entire port at the bottom of the skimmer.

You have closed your valves and haven’t opened them enough.

You have a stoppage in your intake line (skimmer or floor).

Some things to do (evaluate results after each):

Check the flow control tab at the bottom of the skimmer, make sure it is open enough.

Open both intake valves (floor and skimmer valves).

Close skimmer valve completely.

Open skimmer, close floor valve.

If none of those produce any changes, turn off equipment and get a water hose. Put water into the pipe that is feeding water into the pump, plug around your hose with a rag to make a tight connection. Turn on water hose and see if it blows any leaves or debris back into the skimmer (remove basket) it floor.

If no debris, next is to flush water down your skimmer pipe. (Keep in mind, there are two holes, one is most likely plugged.). Do this with the equipment off and the lid off the pump. Yes, you will lose some water, but if the line is sucking dry, you shouldn’t lose much.

Lastly, do you have a spa on the same equipment? If so, what happens we you put into spa mode?

Hopefully something opens up and you get some water flowing.

If not, you probably have a leaks on the intake line - are you losing water when the equipment is off overnight?

ETA: I’m not a pool guy. But I’ve had a pool for over 10 years and I have an extreme love/hate relationship with that Mfer.

I have used Danny Elford with Tropical Pools (not the one in Hammond) for 15 years. He does a great job and his prices are good.

Sounds like maybe the pump impeller is shot.

The pump will run, but cant keep the prime if that is the case.

Should be an easy fix, especially for a pool guy.
