A large outburst can release some 15 billion gallons of water, according to the University of Alaska Southeast and Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center. That's the equivalent of nearly 23,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. During last year's flood, the flow rate in the rushing Mendenhall River was about half that of Niagara Falls, the researchers say.

That's some serious water.

Sorry, just saw this...

Yes, our annual summer Jøkullaup. Record levels this year.

City did a lot of mitigation efforts and it still got through in many areas.

I'm good. I'm about 10 miles from this river.

This was two years ago. This house was more than 100' away from the river at the start of the flood.

This one shows how far that house was from the river at the start of the flood.

The sheer number of regular baws that step up and help with protection and recovery on a volunteer basis is amazing..

Most on here are embrace their anonymity, and that's fine.
You're a good egg and Id drink a beer with you, and Mrs Cars is a peach.

Works for me.. I;ve met a few folks from these sites..

This flood comes a few days after a landslide in Tracy Arm created a 100' tsunami. About 45 miles from here, many cruise ships go into Tracy Arm.

Seems like more warming is also a solution. Once the water can flow more naturally from the basin it will not have these large outbursts.
quote:

Outburst floods are expected to continue as long as the Mendenhall Glacier acts as an ice dam to seal off the basin, which could span another 25 to 60 years, according to the university and science center researchers.
quote:

When the water creates enough pressure, it forces its way under or around the ice dam created by the Mendenhall Glacier, enters Mendenhall Lake and eventually flows down the Mendenhall River, as it did Tuesday.

Right. this is an icefield thats been retreating for a couple hundred years and we used to get a couple of these every summer, albeit smaller.

The basin now just holds more water than ever and only releases once a summer.

Its only been a major problem the past few years. There is another one of these that happens on the Taku River just south of town too.

I'm not sure how those operate. I know they were somewhat successful but not sure how much.

The city billed homeowners along the river 10k each for the preventative measures.

I'll be in Juneau in 10 days any must do's after a Harv and Marv whale tour?

I was planning to go to Tracey's; is it worth it or more of a tourist trap?

Nah, its good crab, though expensive. She started off in a little shack on the dock and hit a gold mine.

I don't think so for a couple of reasons. A mixture of rock and sand would have 2-3 times the weight of water. If you filled it with a water bladder my guess is there will be air in the bladder and void space between the basket and the bladder which could have enough buoyancy to float off or give way to forces from the river.
