I know we have some folks here that are very knowledgeable about thermals. I know jack shite about them. I was tasked with finding a pair of thermal binoculars that will record images. I have no idea where to start, so as usual I come to the OB first.

Personally, I would get a thermal scope and use it as a monocular. Then if you ever want to use it as a scope you have that option.
Look at Outdoorlegacygear.com. They have great prices and super knowledgeable people who can help you. The owners do a youtube review on almost every thermal out there and give honest reviews. Tons of info from them guys.

Pulsar merger series. Your budget will be your limitation.
Why do you want thermal binos? IMO, there are better alternatives to binos for what most use thermal binos for. I thermal hunt weekly and I don’t have a use for them other than to gather cool footage for pulsar.
I have used the merger XP50, XL50 and I’m currently demo-ing the XT50.
IMO the XP and XL are better than the XT (regardless of sensor resolution). Their 385 resolution binos (XQ) will be on par with every other brand mentioned even if the others are 640. Pulsar is untouched in high resolution binos.
Monoculars do the same as binos with less weight and footprint. That’s an options to save some cash.

Lots of friends here in Tennessee buying them thanks to the new night bobcat season. There is no limit to the amount of coyotes/hogs you can shoot with your thermal. The State is really making a push to bring back the native Quail population as well as protect turkey chicks.
quote:
In Tennessee, bobcat hunting with thermal or night vision equipment is allowed during a specific night hunting season on private land/with landowner permission. The season runs from sunset on June 7, 2025, to sunrise on August 10, 2025, and then from sunset on January 17, 2026, to sunrise on March 8, 2026. Hunting is restricted to 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. One bobcat per night may be harvested during this season

Fair enough, i guess.

Binos only have one side for imagery and the other is the laser range finder which add cost if you dont need it
The telos XP50 monocular will have the same image and can be bought w/o LRF. The telos is literally 1/2 of a binocular
Id get the Merger XP50 binos or telos XP50 mono. Superior imagery for gathering cool footage. The XT50 is great but i find its not as crisp as the XP which is crazy because the sensor resolution is 2x the XP. I guess is an algorithm issue
Also, the merger NXP50 is a thermal / digital day time combo. you can expland your footgate to digial daytime imagery too.
