Houston city leaders look to demolish run-down buildings ahead of 2026 World Cup

Houston apparently needs a bit of a makeover before it's featured on the international stage in the 2026 World Cup.
According to an investigation by ABC13, Mayor John Whitmire plans to remove three "dilapidated buildings" from the Midtown and downtown areas: the old Greyhound Station (2201 Main Street) and old Wells Fargo (1803 Travis Street) , as well as the old Holiday Inn (801 St. Joseph Parkway).
Houston Public Works has carried out inspections and issued violations on all three buildings, although none were labeled as "dangerous" under city code, so the city cannot take immediate action.

ABC13's investigation stated that the city plans to hold the owners of the buildings accountable because the structures "pose a risk and add blight in the community." However, the new owner of the old Greyhound Station, Adam Brackman, said the city has yet to reach out to him despite his willingness to work with it. Brackman purchased the old building earlier this year, and while he has a vision to transform the 33,000-square-foot facility, he has not yet presented a concrete plan.

The news arrives at a time when Houston's Midtown has been under a microscope for its decline.
Jorge Ramos, a University of Houston graduate, posted a viral TikTok video describing Houston's Midtown on July 18 that received over 67,000 views.
"Y'all remember when Midtown used to be the sh—? It used to be the place to go to. Now, it's dangerous out there. It's literally going through reverse gentrification right now. The moment you step outside in Midtown, you're greeted with the smell of... Midtown used to be so cool. Everyone went to Midtown, doesn't matter if they were white, hispanic, Black, Asian, everyone was in Midtown back in the day."

Houston will host seven matches of the 2026 World Cup at NRG Stadium, and the EaDo neighborhood will host the weeks-long "Fan Fest," but different parts of the city will serve as home bases for the respective traveling fan groups.

I wonder if they’ve considered Greenspoint or areas around Rankin Rd & Hardy Rd intersection as prospective home bases for the traveling fans groups?

Houston is too spread out. Nothing really great around NRG when they have big game

This is a major problem. There aren’t even nearby hotels. Yes, you can take the rail from downtown or from the medical center….but you guessed it. The rail is littered with homeless and undesirable people. It also smells like piss and body Oder.

That's like New Orleans clearing out the homeless before the Taylor Swift concert.

Don't worry, they'll clean it up for the company. Then, let it go to shite again after they're gone.

It’s amazing how much they cleaned up Discovery Green and the area around Minute Maid for the last SuperBowl. Of course, they let it all go back to shite shortly after getting their paychecks.

Looking that way. Dora the Explorer is begging for property tax increases once again.

San Fran, New Orleans and Houston clean up towns prior to world class events, proving they know their own residents live in a pig sty and they prioritize outside opinion.

They have their hands full. Probably a dozen or more needs to be demolished.
