I just finished Bram Stoker's Dracula and really enjoyed most of it - the first 1/2 or so. That said, I really enjoy the Gothic subgenre.
What are a handful of absolute, must read, Southern Gothic classics that you would recommend?

Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, A Rose For Emily (short story), Flannery O’Conner A Good Man is Hard to Find.
That can start you.

A Good Man is Hard to Find creeped me out when I read it in school. It’s
an excellent piece of writing, though..

Some would disagree, but I would consider Deliverance, by James Dickey, and Child of God, by Cormack McCarthy, examples of "modern" Southern Gothic novels.

It's a collection of short stories but Poachers by Tom Franklin is great.

As I Lay Dying, Cane by Jean Toomer, and--although it doesn't seem like it on the surface-- Children of the Neon Bamboo.

Agreed on both. And for Cormac I'll add Suttree, The Orchard Keeper, and Outer Dark. To me Suttree is Mcarthy's masterpiece (and very Southern Gothic), but yeah....
Funny thing - I just don't get Flannery O'Conner at all. But I flipped many a penny on her grave while studying for ridiculous exams. Her house was about 2 blocks away. But I just don't get her at all.

Oh man, I love O'Conner. Such a spiteful author who loved to deliver her characters into the hand of an angry God.
She's one of those authors who I really fell in love with when I started actually teaching her work in class.
