I believe Desoto was at one point one of the better school districts in the state. What’s this town like? Is it decent for Louisiana standards?

It’s in the middle of nowhere and 80% black
Vida Blue is from there though

Stonewall and the North Desoto schools would be the way to go.

they got a ton of windfall $ from the Haynesville shale play, or whatever it was called, at the time the starting salary for teachers was pretty high for La., way back when it was a nice town, and believe it or not Mansfield was considered (among hundreds of other towns,) for the location of the Air Force Academy

CLECO had one of their power plants located there but I think it’s either being decommissioned or has been.

Mansfield.. absolutely not. Stonewall and the area directly south of Caddo. Yes.

At one time Mansfield was known as the crack capital of the US. North Desoto High school is way better than MHS if you don't mind living about 12 miles North of Mansfield

You want to be in the North Desoto school district or the Stanley (smaller school with a small town feel) district. If you don't have kids, then Grand Cane is a nice town (it is in the wrong school district).
You would not want to live in Mansfield. Housing prices are generally not going up. You can get a nice house on the cheap but you will also have to sell it on the cheap.
Mansfield had a quick flood and one street had sewage back up because someone had stolen the manhole cover. So, all the flood water inundated the sewer (this was according to the Mayor). Most of the residents of Mansfield are small town type people, so the ratchet factor is actually pretty low.
There is a lot of big truck traffic in Desoto Parish.
Desoto Parish has excellent judges. They are conservative. Our D.A. is excellent and is conservative. I'm less impressed with the police jury.
If you questions, I can answer them.

I have gone to Mansfield a few time for work. Never once did I think, hey this would be a good place to move. Similar to a lot of towns/parish-seats I have been to in Louisiana. If I did move to Desoto Parish, it would probably not be Mansfield.

The plant is closed, as is the coal mine that accompanied it.
The oil and gas boom, including a lot of pipeline construction, has prevented that from being a huge economic disaster.

I've been around Mansfield and lived in the town for quite a while. It is not a "crack capital." We were on a deadend "L" shaped street with a big antebellum house anchoring the L. There were 3 white families and 8 black families, with one house empty because the woman went nuts. All of my neighbors were awesome.

The whole town could be on crack, and not be the crack capital of the US because there’s only like 3k people there
