I have 3 zones, but the pipes only bang when section 1 is on, which is the section for the front yard. Any thoughts on how best to troubleshoot to determine the root cause? Irrigation system is about 20 years old. TIA.

Are you sure it's the pipes banging and not "water hammer". I have a faucet with hose I ran to my 2nd story back porch to make it easier to water all the potted plants on the porch and hanging from the ceiling. My wife will often water them and that is when we get water hammering going on because she doesn't turn on the water quite hard enough to prevent it.

When I water, I turn the faucet all the way on and adjust how much is released by the spray attachment on the hose.

If you are not familiar with water hammering, look it up to get a better explanation.

Could be water hammer, mine does the same when I first turn it on for the season and it hammers through the anti-backflow valve. If it's hot enough and hasn't been run regularly, it'll do it again when re-activated from time time as the water in the delivery pipe evaporates. was told it's normal and not a concern.

Search water hammer arrestor. These fixed the issue for me with my sprinkler timers opening/shutting.

Might have air in your lines. Try to purge all your lines with the water off and see if the heads pop up which should be enough to purge them. I had the same problem with Zone 3 and that's how I fixed it.

We had water hammer and I got the arrestors and they didn’t do anything. I called a plumber and he installed a pressure relief tank and still had it. I ended up getting a can of spray foam and sprayed it down the holes the pipes go into in the attic. That fixed it after spending $400 on a plumber.

That’s a damn good idea.
