Peel & Eat Shrimp - Imported or domestic?

We ate at OSO in Orange Beach was supposedly a “locals” restaurant tucked away into a harbor neighborhood.
On the appetizer menu they had peel and eat shrimp and the description said tossed in a viet Cajun butter.
I asked the waiter if it was fresh shrimp or imported. Typically the peel and eat shrimp “pre cracked” have always been imported.
The description of them gave the idea of imported shrimp. But waiter claimed they were fresh.
After talking to a friend who owns a seafood restaurant, he stated the only way you can have fresh pre split shrimp is if someone is sitting in the back pre cracking them by hand.
I thought it was disappointing that a gulf restaurant would serve imported shrimp.

Unfortunately a lot of restaurants in OB and GS get away with selling cheaper imported fish and shrimp. Majority of customers here in summer want seafood that doesn’t taste like seafood so they can tell there friends in Tennessee they had seafood on vacation. As far as the restaurant, imported is 1/3 the price and bottoms lines are very tight right now.

That’s not true at all. They have machines that butterfly and devein that can keep shell on.
While it is true most places that serve the “EZ peel” shrimp are imported, it’s definitely possible to use fresh local shrimp

How do you know they weren’t?

Anytime I eat shrimp from an all you can eat Chinese buffet, I just assume they are premium gulf shrimp.

If it didn’t say local they were definitely imported, and if it said local they were still probably imported. Big story around that going on here with a ton of places lying about where they get it, unfortunately.

Even if they were EZ-Peel, Biloxi Shrimp Co sells a shite ton of Gulf EZ-Peel shrimp so it very well could have been Gulf shrimp.
The concerning thing is that the server wouldn’t just go back there and check.
