If you put Tyrann on the 2012 team…. Are they better than 2011?

We lost 3 games that year. One was Clemson where the starters were asking to come out.

But we lost to Florida by one score and bama by one score. I think Mathieu helps us win that game. A big punt or a big turnover.

Mathieu snuffs out the bama screen, plus I think he likely creates atleast 1 turnover in that game.

Then we play in the sec championship…. The offense was more balanced with Mett near the end of the season than it was in 2011.

Even if we weren’t technically better than 2011, I think the rest of the CFB world was also weaker.

We stomp ND the same as bama.

2011 defense was still better, but the team overall probably would have been better, but it’s because of Mett being a QB who could throw. Really and truly tho, it all came down to Les Miles limiting our opportunities.

No doubt we would have won all 3 of those and a national title. TM was a difference maker in every game he played.

Not better then 2011.. but they likely win the natty yes.

2011 was a different animal of football. Its one of those you cant explain with stats, and you dont really need to. When you watched that team it was different, then anything ive watched for lsu football for 35 years... and frankly college football. Only 3-4 teams even come to mind that I think could hang hat on hat with that team.

If bama doesn't get a mulligan and an extra week of prep we are NC in 2011.

Deep state Bama hype machine fricked us

Do you think Alabama needed that extra week of prep to stop the toss dive?

Probably would have picked the off that Bama screen pass that lost us the game.

I think that's what I mean... A better outcome... Maybe not as talented overall but the having Mathieu, a better QB situation, and a weaker overall conference and NCAA... I think we win a title with Mathieu

Early in that rivalry, Miles had Saban's number

Wins in 2007 (Saban's first year)

Took them to the wire in 08 and 09 with bad QB play....

Then we flip the script and win in 10 and 11.... If Bama doesn't get the mulligan, History is completely different.

Miles wins #2 and has just as many titles as Saban at that point... Then if you add in Mathieu staying out of trouble, you are looking at Les Miles having 3 titles and 4 wins over Saban.

Not saying Saban wouldn't go on to win some titles, but I think the snowball effect of Bama winning 6 titles over the next decade and a half would be far less likely... Miles was an excellent recruiter and with a few more wins over Saban, I think it would have been hard for Saban to negatively recruit LSU the way he was able to after he started to own us.

The real problem is they didn't let Mett/Odell/Jarvis sling it until 2013 and by then all the defenders were gone. If Tyrann plays in 2012 and they let the offense play with no shackles then they are the best team probably. 2011 defense was still better though. Brockers was a huge piece, among others who left after 2011.

I mean - he was the best player on the defense. Hard to quantify - not sure how to compare the 2012 team with him to the 2011 team, but I for sure think that the record is different in 2012 with him on the field and we possibly win a national championship. I think he helps us beat Bama and maybe even Florida (although the Florida game was an offensive problem).

Well put. The final scores and stats from that year don't tell the story. When you watched the games it was clear that LSU was operating at a level we rarely see. With an offense going for 40 and a defense regularly holding opponents to single digits, it was total dominance. They didn't seal the deal but still, unreal football team.

That game still pisses me off. Yeldon made Chavis look like a fool.

Not sure the 2012 offense was capable of outscoring 2011's which was over an Offensive TD/gm better than 2012 prior to bowl season iirc.

2013 surely needed TM7 plus more D help to compliment the high scoring O.

While we would have won the games in 2012, that 2012 team would not have been as good and you have revisionist history on Mett's first year. The guy threw 12 TDs to 7 ints.

Lee and Jefferson combined for 2000 pass yards and 20 TDs to 5 ints while only throwing the ball 267 times. Mett threw the ball 352 times for 2610 yards. He only completed 59% of his passes while the other two completed over 61% of theirs. Also, playing that ridiculous Bama defense twice made LSU's QB play look bad. If you take both Bama games away, LSU had a really effective QB situation in 2011. We should have played Oklahoma St in the NCG.

Frankly, the 2011 version of Tyrann Mathieu would make any LSU football team in history better and more dangerous. Just the FF, defensive score or big play in special teams that you know will happen puts that team that might have lost otherwise 1 step closer to turning it around.

This is a good question - I think Badger makes a difference in all 3 losses that year. We're only talking about 13 points total to tie, 16 to win all three games.

So,

Are they better than 2011?

A: A resounding, "Maybe?"

No

2011 is one of the greatest teams in CFB history. What they accomplished will never be done again.

Beat the National Champ and Sugar Bowl Champ on the road.
Beat the Orange Bowl Champ on the road.
Beat the Rose Bowl Champ at a neutral site.
Beat the Cotton Bowl Champ at home.
