I found an old article on Tito Santana the other day and read that when he was playing football at WTU Tully Blanchard was the QB and that’s how he eventually ended up in pro wrestling. I looked into WTU football just to see if any other famous people came from the program and found out that apparently they were a pro wrestling factory. It’s pretty damn impressive who played ball there
Tully Blanchard
Frank Goodish (AKA Bruiser Brodie)
Ted DiBiase
Bobby Duncum
Manny Fernandez
Dory Jr. and Terry Funk
Stan Hansen
Dusty Rhodes
Tito Santana

Credit to moontigr for these additional names to the list
Barry Windham
Dick Murdoch
Scott Casey

Was going to downvote, but then read the list.
Damn. You right.
Tully, Raging Bull, Tito, DiBiase, Hansen and, of course, the Rhodes lineage.
Upvote.

Would have been a mean arse team if they all played at the same time
Hansen and Brodie would have wrecked some shite

Barry Windham was a long snapper and tight end at West Texas, but worked against his football scholarship by working pro wrestling shows, which the university discovered. Apparently his father Blackjack Mulligan (who played football himself at UTEP and later the NY Jets) wasn't too happy when he found out. Barry claims he ran a 4.6 40 at 6'4", 238 lbs.
Dick Murdoch also supposedly attended West Texas after being a celebrated athlete in HS, but the rumor is that he was never actually enrolled at the university. He just showed up, tried out for the football team and made it. He periodically showed up in classes to keep this pretext up, but was eventually found out.
Scott Casey and Kelly Kiniski also went there.

I guess Dory Sr. had his sons scouting talent from their old football program to bring into the fold at Western States Sports when it comes to some of these guys

Murdock was never on the team but BSed he was to the point where he would play in the alumni games.

Dibiase was going to sign with either Arizona or Arizona State until he chose West Texas due to family connections with the Funks through his late stepfather Iron Mike Dibiase.

Dibiase had a great joke about Tully as his QB.
He said they were playing so poorly that Tully tried to kill himself but someone intercepted the bullet.

Dick Slater went to the University of Tampa and played Football with Mr Wonderful and Sloth(From The Goonies).
I've seen interviews where he beat the shite outta a Bar room of people and flushed Sting's head into the toilet.
