Jeff Daniels was not the first choice to play Joshua Chamberlain in "Gettysburg" (1993)

For those of you who have seen the movie, Daniels gives an incredible performance that many thought should have garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. As it was a niche film as well as one that was originally designed for television, this did not happen. Despite how great Daniels ended up being in the role of Joshua L. Chamberlain, he was not director Ronald F. Maxwell's first choice. In fact he was forced upon the filmmaker by the producers or else the project might not have been green lit.
In this video posted by the American Battlefield Trust last year, Maxwell reveals that he had originally wanted to cast a relatively unknown actor from Australia in the role. Because the actor was so unknown, however, the producers refused to let him have the part. When Maxwell insisted that he was the right person, the producers doubled down and threatened to shutdown production. Since an imperfect cast was better than no cast at all, Maxwell had to give the part to Jeff Daniels - who ultimately wound up knocking it out of the part.
The actor who he had to tell thanks but no thanks? None other than Russell Crowe.

“Actually, I didn’t use ChatGPT to write that post — I wrote it myself! But I guess I’ll take it as a compliment that it sounded polished enough for you to wonder.”
The above was actually written by ChatGPT. The OP was my own work.

Very cool story. I wish they could have finished the trilogy

I guess he isn't familiar with your history threads on the OT. Unless you didn't write those.
Great video and great stories, particularly Daniels threatening to leave if Maxwell wasn't allowed to reshoot the scene he wanted. I wonder what became of those a-hole TNT production executives.

That’s not what ChatGPT said.

Not sure I could’ve ever guessed Crowe was what this thread would be about

He was able to parlay that into dumb and dumber the next year

God, Legacy Film is one of the worst industries to be in with AI as it is. The next 10 years are going to be amazing to watch.
