It is the 40th anniversary of the Rick Camp Game...

The Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets met on this day 40 years ago and played one of the wackiest games in the history of Major League Baseball. Tied at the end of nine innings, the game would go into extras. Before long it was early in the morning of July 5 and the game was in the Bottom of the 18th with Braves trailing by one.
Up walks the relief pitcher Rick Camp, a man who had just 12 hits in his entire MLB career, who improbably homered into left field to send the game into the 19th inning.

And.... the Mets go on to score five in the top of the 19th and win the game 16-13.

I would have loved to have seen the bat flip

I think that game caused a local ordinance to be changed because they still had the July 4th fireworks show after the game.

I was 15 and watching that game on TV while my dad had fallen asleep on the couch. I went crazy and startled the crap out of him. I still live watching that replay. It’s those little memories that are precious.

So many great things about that video and that game:
Darryl Strawberry and Davey Johnson getting thrown out after arguing ball and strikes in extra innings
John Sterling musing about Camp going deep before it happened
Gary Carter waving the outfielders to come in
Danny Heep in LF realizing the game wasn’t going to be over yet.
And Camp came up again in the bottom of the 19th as the tying run but struck out.

Yep, the city of Atlanta banned fireworks after midnight.

Rick Camp would hit 6th in the current Braves lineup
