GSP spinoff thread

Wanted the OB opinion of using a GSP as a deer tracking dog. I’ve had a weim before and I’m aware of their Velcro tendencies, energy and needing a job or task. I don’t bird hunt anymore but deer hunt and thought it would be fun yet challenging to train a GSP to track dead deer. Thoughts?

Haven’t seen anyone with GSP. But I’ve seen some GWPs that were really good.

I dont see why they wouldn't be great at it if you train them.
I use a miniature lab but I know folks who use little terriers and theyre better on a lead since they cant drag you through a briar patch

My GSP tracked a 17 hour old trail over 200 yards last year. They are very determined when trained. I started him with liver trails at 8 weeks old.

I’ve used small terriers also. Patterdales and currently a Jagd terroir. I don’t know if any dog has higher prey drive than those two. But I’ve been looking at a GWP for something more versatile that I don’t have to worry about ending up underground chasing nutria in the marsh.

A few years ago, i needed a blood trailing dog, so I reached out to a FB group. The guy who responded showed up with a GSP. Several miles and a couple hours later we finally recovered the buck after the GSP bayed it in the thickest creek bottom I've ever been in. I've never been more impressed with a dog. The grit, determination and drive that dog had was incredible, and all he asked for was a pat on the head

My GSP was training really well and then life took over and just stopped working with him. But I would drag a deer hide or leg around the park and go back an hour or two with him to go find it.

GSP’s are a “versatile breed”. In Germany, Deutsch Kurzhaars (German Shorthair), are used for upland, Forrest (blood, driven hunts), and water.
Your GSP more nose than you probably know how to train.
