Fishing Dixey Bar For Bull Reds?

Sometime in the next year or two, we plan to buy or build a place on the west side of Mobile Bay. I plan to have myself a decent bay boat and have been reading that redfishing on Dixey Bar (and Mobile Bay area in general) is awesome. Have you fine folks found this to be true?

Dont know about bulls, but my personal best speck was caught at a rig just outside the boat launch in Ft. Morgan.

I fish the area a 3 or 4 times per year with my BIL. We've smashed the reds at the bar a few times. The fishing when I go with him is usually hit or miss (I think that's more our fault than the bay's fault) but we are usually able to catch something even if it's just a few sheepsheads. We've caught a few nice tripletails as well.

It may be the easiest spot to catch fish in the entire gulf. Oct Nov is guaranteed bulls.

We used to have a place on DI and we would fish Dixey a lot.
It's pretty easy.
You have to fish a falling tide.
Fish east of the channel
Start your drift up around the northern edge of the land (Ft Morgan), and drift back south with 4-6" pogeys using a carolina rig.
When the tide starts falling you will mostly catch sharks and jacks.
after a little while the reds will show up.
I used 4500 spinning rods with 20lbs braid and a 30-40lbs mono leader.
I think I used .5oz weights and 5/0 hooks.
We caught them up to 40lbs.
at the end of the drift the water will start getting shallow, Watch yourself so you don't hit the sand on the bar and run back north.
there used to be a pontoon at the ramp on DI that sold bogeys. Not sure it's still there or not, but if it is, just pull up and tell them what you want and they will put them in your live well.

I grew up walking through the dunes and fishing off the westernmost tip of Fort Morgan in the fall. It would be a big group of friends from high school, build a fire, listen to football games on a radio, and fish for hours. I don't even know if you're allowed out there after hours any more, but we had a blast. Every once in a while a big school of reds would come through, and we'd catch a few.
We didn't have a boat, but I'm sure it'd a lot easier to catch more than what we were doing. We still had fun though!

It’s been years, but a friend was dialed in there and we did great. Two of the four on that trip are no longer with us. Good memories.

Like stated, fall was usually better for the bigger fish, but as long as you’re fishing a falling tide, you will have a good chance to catch fish.
I will say that I never fished in cold weather, so, may not have much luck then.
