Why is a dividend needed? Just index the bitcoin price.

BITO is a crazy investment concept. More downside risk than bitcoin and less possible upside since inception.

Your chart from the BITO website is very misleading. Change the timeline to 1 year and 3 years, where $10,000 invested in BITO became $18,000 and $50,000, respectively.

There is nothing misleading about the chart man. It’s their own chart

If you dropped $10k into Bitcoin in either period you’d have more, but when it’s gone down, BITO has gone down more. It’s an insane risk reward tradeoff.

Higher downside capture and lower upside capture makes zero sense for any long term hold.

Knew it wasn’t going to be a much as last month based on lack of bitcoin swings.7.5cents lower than I expected. Not a bad prediction.

Yeah, I should have known better. I based my guess on the recent BITX dividend which was a little higher than last month. The BITX dividend monthly change used to be a good predictor of the BITO dividend, but that correlation was broken in December 2024.

I’m pretty sure the BITO monthly income is not correlated with BTC volatility. It’s not writing options against bitcoin like other covered call style ETFs.

The monthly distribution is an effort to pro-rate the fund’s income earned primarily from BTC futures appreciation (contango).

Lowered than expected but still crazy what this dividend is. I just reinvest in BITO.

This is true because of taxes. However just going by the numbers it is not true.

10k invested into Bitcoin one year ago would be worth $17,036.
10k invested into BITO and Dripped the next day would be worth $18,132.

The biggest difference is if it's not in a retirement account, then the distributions of BITO are taxed which will end up double taxing you.

You are correct but big movements either way helps the profits thus the dividends

How are you double taxed?

Tax the distribution (nobody knows the rate atm), Then you invest it again via DRIP.... Those shares you sell at a later date will also get taxed when you sell.
