Found this gem...

Falling for phone scam

I get several spam phone calls a day. Have you or anyone you know actually fallen for one of these scams?

They must have some success at doing this or they wouldn’t continue to try it every day. We were building a house last year so I had to answer the phone for every call. I’m not sure if that’s why I continue to get so many. I have a couple of blockers on my phone but they still get through. Do you have any tips on how to get off the list?

So... anybody know anyone who falls for phone scams? Or how to get off the list?

This is very prevalent. They prey on the elderly and lonely. I had a lady call me the other day asking if I could help get her money back from the most recognizable ceos in the world. She gave them north of $100k.

I sat in a CLE last year where a secret service member spoke. It was scary as hell listening to the shite he was talking about. Google “butchering the pig.”

If you know anyone that this has happened to, I’d suggest calling the local secret service office. There’s little change to recover the funds, but they make arrests.

What makes people vulnerable to falling for the type scams you listed? Aside from being elderly?

I appreciate your concern. It really amazes me how some people can delight in other peoples’s misery.

I posted the post about my wife because I was very upset and having a hard time dealing with this. I thought if I could help someone avoid a similar situation it would be worth it.

Some of the people on this site are so miserable it’s really sad. You literally have no compassion.

Congrats on finding an old post and trying to be the cool guy on a message board.

Have a good night.

The promise of making money and “trust,” unfortunately.

The scammers are ruthless.

If you ever want to frick with someone sign their cell number up for subsidized Obama care insurance. They'll have to change their number.

I do not delight in most people's misery.

My compassion is predicated on believing you... I find it hard to believe.

Why did your wife go to two different banks?

Were they different branches of the same bank or two totally different banks?

Why didn't she text you in the midst of this? Cellphones can text while on an active call.

Hoping for an answer as to why the wife went to two different banks without thinking to text her husband.

So your husband doesn’t pay enough attention to you and I imagine your lapdog can no longer fit in your lap.

You're absolutely right... my 75lb lapdog does NOT fit into my lap- although she tries from time to time!

A friend almost fell for the computer virus fraud, where his computer was blocked due to a virus. Number to call was claimed to be Microsoft but it was fake. He went to his bank just to check & the manager told him that they were getting 10+ scams a WEEK. Most wanted $9,000 , an amount with no real reason but the common amount.

Anytime a sorry motherfricker with an Indian accent calls that's an immediate red flag!

That one would have given me pause... but I'm no computer expert and would have definitely called my husband or son in law directly after shutting the computer down.

Scams like that are easier for me to understand people, especially elderly or tech unsavvy, falling for.

I'm STILL calling the other thread bullshite.

The OP in that thread stated :

quote:

There are a couple of people on TD that know me and know that it really did happen.

I'll retract my statement if any of them can vouch for his story.

quote:

They kept telling her if she got off the line that she would forfeit the money. They told her if she went to the police dept she would be arrested. She said they even had like police walkie-talkie sounds in the background.
They originally asked for $7,000 and she went into the bank and withdrew it. She had to drive somewhere in Gulfport to deposit it in a coinme machine. I have both deposit slips. They then put another officer on the phone and told her they had made a mistake and the charges were for $17,000. She went to another bank and withdrew $10,000. They then asked for another $17.000 and she drove to the Ocean Springs sheriffs dept.

So, she was okay NOT going to the police for the first $17,000, but when they asked for ANOTHER $17,000 - THAT'S WHEN she decided she was ready to be arrested?

Oh yeah... the plot holes are huge. And questions largely unanswered.
