Thoughts on Formula 1: The Movie (Non-Spoiler)

Kerry Condon is such a cutie pie. She’s so sweet. And she has that strong Irish husky accent. Most of the movie I was smitten by her.

I don’t generally like sports movies. With that said, I’m a huge F1 guy so I was curious.

I thought the movie did a fairly ok job at doing what it wanted to. It’s fairly generic and predictable but accomplishes what it set out to. It’s one of the best looking movies. There’s a lot of great camerawork to make the action feel visceral. Seeing it in imax, the race commentary during the race played from the back of the theater where all the rest of the sound came from the front. Very interesting effect. Now I did find the commentary a little pandering but more on that below.

And the pacing of the movie was great.

Joshua was really too unlikable at first. I know they’re trying to show his growth but way to one the nose.

Now the actual formula one stuff. I think it’s fascinating some of the sessions they made. Like mind boggling. I know they have to simplify things for the general audience and they generally do a great job of it. But some of the insinuations of the actual rules and racecraft is a bit tough for me to swallow. Now most people won’t be bothered by that, fair enough.

I also thought using real drivers was oddly distracting. I think the cars/livery was from 3 seasons ago and there’s been a lot of shakeup in teams so it feels dated.

Also, Lewis Hamilton is a producer. And the end of the movie takes place in Dubai. Feel like there was some 2021 Dubai thoughts that went into the writing of that scene.
