Guys, in the late 70's and early 80's Dale had the dome rocking. It was unreal. It was every bit as fun as Saturday Night in Death Valley.

You may not believe that, but we used to sleep on the ramps in order to rush the floor and get our seats four hours before the game! Yeah, that's how great it was.

I wish you all could live those times and see LSU be a top 5 team and just KNOW that we would win it all.

Well, to those that say it can't be like football, just don't know that it already was. Not the same, but every bit as good.

I hope Trent gets it back to the top.

GEAUX!

That is what my dad tells me. Of course wasn't there a 4-7 football season thrown in there (81?)

I remember the 80's and the fervor that went with LSU basketball. Daddy Dale was a motivator, recruiter and by God one of the best promoters you will ever find. Remember LSU playing N.C., Georgetown. Playing in the Assembly Center, even in the SuperDome. An LSU basketball gameday had the feel of a football gameday.

In the Fall of 81 ... Bama was ranked in the Top 10 they came to town and Daddy Dale and the boys rocked their world. I left the Deaf Dome with my ears ringing! This had never happened to me before and has not happened again at any LSU event!

Yes,in '83. 1981 was worse: 3-7-1.

Well when basketball is so good, and football is so bad with the exception of '82, priorities are bound to shift.

personally, i like the close feel and atmosphere in the arena of bball games a bit better when both are at their finest. a rockin basketball game is more fun to go to than a bad arse football game. obviously, that opinion changes by person.

Rockchalk -

I agree with you there. A more intimate setting, a louder environment and IMO, the players feed more off the crowd in CBB.

I was so fortunate during my time at LSU to see some of the program's greatest teams & players.

Durand "Rudy" Macklin, Ethan Martin, Howard "Hi-C" Carter, Greg "Cookieman" Cook, Al Green, Willie "Black Jet" Sims, Leonard "Swat" Mitchell, etc.

For my money, Dwayne "Astronaut" Scales was maybe the most athletic big man to come through Tigertown. Guy was 6'9", about 230 lb., and had some of the most ridiculous dunks ever to go along with the smoothest turnaround jumper that simply couldn't be defensed.

This is absolutely the truth. Especially when Kentucky came to town, it was great to go to a game knowing the Tigers could stand toe-to-toe with them. Made waiting in line outside Deaf Dome for hours go by in a hurry.

If the Deaf Dome gets rockin, it will definitely be better than this football season. The TAF's corporate ticket buyers have not polluted the PMAC the way they have Tiger Stadium and the new Box. The PMAC crowd is mostly purists and students, with exceptions. When the Deaf Dome rocks, it's an unbeatable experience.

Completely agree with ya. I have been telling people that for years and it's fallen on deaf ears. Big time road wins like this and events like this and last weekend will get people there. Last week's crowd was phenominal and it was great to hear that place roar.

We didn't have a bad football program for 25 years, we just had some great basketball. Brown brought some phenomenal players into BR, Ruddy Macklin, the Ice Man Scales, John Williams, Chris Williams, Shaq, and on and on. These were great players. Dale was a great recruiter and motivator. He was not a very good coach or he would have won a national championship a couple of times. But as they are saying here, it was a great period in LSU athletics!!

The funny thing is this:

The reason LSU basketball is not loved and revered and respected the way it once was is because of football...and because half of the fans of LSU football have only been fans since the Saban era. Seriously, I have grown up with some guys, who in school - hated LSU, and now...season tix and the whole 9. That said, LSU basketball was NEVER something they cared about and most of them didn't start watching LSU basketball until Duke game of '06. Them two games later, the UCLA game threw 'em right back off.

The football only fan will NEVER understand and they'll always think the basketball purists are idiots for comparing the two. Look, football is still my king as well, but give me LSU hoops over keeping up with football recruiting any damn day of the week. Recruiting is fun...but I do not influence RR's decision. The rain dance I did for McKnight sure as hell didn't work. So, I leave that up to the Bayou Bashers.

LSU basketball is special as hell. This team is already special, no matter how they end up, because it's just amazing to see a group of young men believe in each other and their coach.

I'll never forget 1968, 69 and 70. The football was great and Maravich was amazing. i think that LSU had the best team in the country in 1969. And the Pistol had the old barn really rocking!

It can be that way again. LSU basketball is heading in the right direction. LSU football should be powerful for years to come.

Pisces - you've been pretty money tonight with your posts...the one I refer to above and the one that followed it.

Several years ago, while waiting in line for Illinois Sugar Bowl tickets, I got a chance to talk to $kip about LSU Basketball. I pleaded with him to put the students back on top of the court as opposed to how they are now. Unfortunately $kip just didn't understand the impact of something like that and sold out for the dollars. The "polution" as you so aptly put it is not as bad for basketball, but there is some.

And just to talk about some of the excitement that I was able to experience, the 1990-1991? UNLV game was one for the ages. The entire overtime was deafening and the talent on that court was something that is so rare in todays game.

Anyway, hopefully TJ will be given a chance to get us back to those days because I think with some time, we can come somewhere close to such an outstanding atmosphere.

Ahh....Man. Dale wasn't afraid to have anyone on the schedule. I had forgotten about the UNLV game. I also remember this game. 54,000 on hand to watch LSU vs Georgetown. It was a sight.

quote:

Grant got off a set shot that was heading in the right direction before Mourning soared in the air and deflected it. The ball floated short of the basket, but LSU forward Wayne Sims tipped it toward Blanton, who grabbed the loose ball, shot in a hurry and watched as the ball went in as the buzzer sounded. The second-chance basket sent the record crowd into delirium as LSU won, 82-80.
