Colorado resident Jake Rosencranz, 29, was dipping his feet in the ocean on Friday around 12:30pm at New Smyrna Beach when he was hit with a lethal bolt of electricity.
On a delayed trip to celebrate their marriage, Rosencrantz and his wife Leah set out to enjoy a day at the beach. Locals said that the sky on June 20 was clear and sunny, despite bad weather further inland.
Rosencrantz was only standing in ankle-deep water when the freak tragedy occurred and he collapsed in the water.
Volusia County Beach Safety said he was hit by a 'blue sky lightning strike,' which can occur during seemingly clear weather. Despite the conditions, officials said lightning strikes can happen as far as 20 miles from the edge of a storm.
According to local outlets, the edge of this particular storm was only four miles away. One witness told local news: 'It was the most crackling, electrical hit you could imagine. I mean like fierce.'
Witnesses said that they heard cries for help and saw bystanders rushed to pull him out of the water, as soon as it happened. A nearby nurse was the first to start CPR while a lifeguard several feet away was notified about the incident.

So
Any word on Guildenstern?
ETA: it's tragic and bizarre...but if Thor randomly decides to take you out there's not much you can do.
Poor bride. She must have been absolutely shocked.

Shocking (in a different way) to them both.

This is not something most people are aware of. It is a fact, lightning is common a LONG way from active storms. This is a tragic story and probably no precaution that could have prevented it.

What’s the old saying… When you number is up, your number is up.. God has a plan.
Tragic for his bride though… Bless her heart..

Think about every time you've been swimming within 20 miles of a thunderstorm...

Interested to know which part of his plan required randomly, without any sort of warning, frying a newlywed on his honeymoon.
Quite a Rube Goldberg contraption.

More common than you’d think. Guy I work with had a daughter that died from a lightening strike on the beach years ago. Tragic and shocking.

Damn, wife and I were just at NSB last week visiting my folks. I can tell you there was a big storm that came through that Friday around lunch time. Just dumped buckets of water for a couple hours. So while it may have been sunny at the beach there was a whopper of a storm very nearby.
I don't frick around with lightning.

Something to be mindful of is even the thin anvil of a storm can still strike you with a bolt of positive lightning, even if the core of a storm is many miles away. There is enough static friction from ice in that cloudtop that can cause enough charge separation/strike.
James Spann is a prominent weatherman in the community, and the only thing he is truly fearful of is lightning.

Seriously, just about every afternoon during summer break as a kid. We have afternoon thunderstorms in every area of the south I have lived in the summer and when I was a kid swimming at the same time was what we did. We would get out if we heard thunder (and someone made us LOL) but not hearing thunder is no indication that there isn't lightning possible in the area. Technology identifying lighting potential is very good at informing anyone interested but most of us still rely on looking at the sky. It is not overly risky but it can be and often is. We cease crane operations when conditions are right within 50 miles which means crane operations from April to November are usually done by 8 or 9 am every day. It is a real thing....

Maybe not a plan, probably the wrong wording, but I definitely believe when you number is up, your number is up.
My B-I-L was killed in a car accident, back in the 90’s, outside of Fort Worth. He was traveling in the middle lane on the interstate, speeding drunk driver losses control of his car, it crosses the center line and goes airborne landing on the top of my B-I-L’s car crushing it. Minute faster or slower, he probably would’ve avoided it.
This is when I started believing in the numbers up thing..
