Need help identifying and controlling a fungus in my yard

Cross posted from the OB because the mods wouldn't move the thread for me. Wanted to get a focused opinion here too.
I'm in north Texas (Zone 8b) and I've had a fungus growing in my yard for the last few years. It was in a relatively small area but has blown up since and is now spread all over the yard. It grows quickly, covers the tip of the Bermuda stalk and covers feet, paws, and shoes with black spores. If I cut on Sunday, it's back by Friday. I'm worried about the kids getting into it and the dog carrying it into the house. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I consulted with the county extension office and it's called leaf smut. There's a pamphlet but it doesn't do much to help.

looks like slime mold. If it is it’s harmless

Leaf smut mostly forms on the bermuda seed heads. Make sure you are watering correctly and mow more often.

If slime mold a nice source of info is: LINK
Unfortunately, the advice for leaf smut and slime mold is the same..."live with it". If you want to try something, reduce watering, reduce nitrogen fertilizer and mow more often.

I stopped watering completely last year in triple digit heat and the junk persisted. Liquid fertilizer at the beginning of spring with some selective herbicide but otherwise nothing else enriching this year. Your advice is all I've been able to find. "Do better, scrub" is all the Texas extension had. I've got an inquiry at my local extension office but they haven't found anything yet.
