Samsung 990 Pro SSD Install and Drive Cloning

I've never heard of a heat sink for a SDD. The last one that came out didn't have a heat sink.

Never had one that fancy. Earlier, you were talking about spinning disks. Doubt you could use more than pcie3.0 in that machine. I’ve heard heat sinking depends on storage density but don’t know for sure.
I don’t think SSD is like gpu with throttling and all that though so heat sinking depends would be safety related rather than performance. If it comes with it, use it.

Edit- Google says the versions are backward compatible so I didn't completely waste my money.

It is backwards compatible but I don’t know if that affects heat. These things don’t have built in thermal management. Need a board more advanced than this one more than likely.

Use it for what? If it’s for a NAS or a PS5 you’re gonna need a heat sink. And it’s one for a Synology it will also be expensive AF.

NVME drives will throttle if they overheat, though most home users wouldn’t really notice the difference. As for the latter bit, that drive absolutely should use a heat sink. OP likely bought it without one (which is cheaper), which is an option because most people looking to buy high end NVME drives have motherboards that have heat sinks, so including one with every drive needlessly inflates price.
Shame makers of AIO liquid cooling systems haven’t picked up on that re: bundling fans…

JRN's right. If you use Samsung Magician, you can check the operating temperature. I have 3? NVME drives, and the difference in the temperature between my oldest model of drive and the newest on PCIe 5 is for sure noticeable. All have heat sinks, but the newest one runs probably 15c hotter than the old ones.

If you get a 990 pro, you must download samsung magician and make sure the firmware is up to date or its possible your drive will die very fast.

Thank you for this.

drive installed, formatted and recognized in win11 and bios, I download samsung magician, run the exe, completed, but it will not open. Every time I click it, it says "Allow this to make changes on your device?" and I click yes, and nothing happens. Is it something that runs in the background? Or is there more frickery going on?

Sounds like something weird going on because Samsung magician should open like any other program and has an interface where you can check drive health and update firmware.

Try right clicking on it and selecting “run as administrator.”

Same deal.
Google AI said I can use Windows to check for updates on the drive, so I did that, and Windows says there are no updates for it, and it's good to go. Is that trustworthy?

Is that checking the driver or the firmware? Win11 did not identify that my 980 Pro had outdated firmware. Samsung Magician caught it and updated smoothly.

Firmware updates issues notwithstanding, I also just discovered Windows 11 doesn't have a cloning or backup feature other than Onedrive.
So, how do I :
1: Clone the existing piece of shite drive to the new fancy drive
2: Set up backups to the old piece of shite drive.

Following because I bought this exact drive (to be delivered tomorrow) to clone the current lower capacity C drive with the operating system.
I watched a video that suggested using MiniTool Partition Wizard to do this. It caught my attention because the paid (or trial) version has a wizard to perform this exact function. I'm sure there are others and I'm still researching, so if someone has recommendations please give them.
I also found:
EaseUS Disk Copy ($20 monthly subscription -- cancel anytime)
Article on Doing This with DiskGenius For Free
It looks like Samsung Magician will also do this as well, if you can get it working. I just loaded it and updated the firmware on my current 980 PRO (which is almost full).

Looks like it will only do Samsung to Samsung. I am cloning from Seagate to Samsung, making that the new boot drive, then trying to set backups to the old Seagate. I'm gonna end up having to pay for something because Microsoft is back in Antitrust mode.
ETA- I finally got Magician to run. I had to recertify all my Microsoft account credentials because they believed I had been compromised in some way, so I couldn't run anything as admin on the PC. Such a fricking runaround. And the firmware on the new Samsung drive is the latest, right out of the box. I bought directly from Samsung, not a reseller.

I've got some critical work to do Monday/Tuesday so I'm going to wait to tackle this later in the week. I'm going Samsung to Samsung, so can at least report how it worked or didn't.

I tried the "free trial" of easeUS and got the drives synced and ready to go, click proceed, and it takes me straight to the pay-for-play screen.
I guess free trial means you get to see the screens, but not actually do anything.

Alright, so I got my stuff done and decided to tackle this today.
My PC was due to be cleaned, so I got the lawn blower and got rid of a small rat nest in the chassis before inserting the new drive in my final M.2 slot.
I booted the PC and the new drive was recognized. Yay. I used Samsung Magician and cloned the operating system drive. It didn't take long at all.
I was feeling frisky, so I decided to flash the BIOS on my motherboard with the latest and then went into boot options. I figured out how to designate the new drive as the primary boot options, saved, and exited for reboot.
Thankfully, it booted. When looking at the drives via Explorer my new drive became the C drive and the old operating system drive became E. It looks like everything is working fine.
I was going to format the old drive, but when trying it said the drive was in use. I'm going to reboot and see if it gives me that prompt again. If so, I'll wonder if somehow some apps are pointing to my old drive. Hmmm.. So, partial success!
EDIT: I formatted the drive. No problems afterward.
