Why Does Crowton Need a Dual Type QB?

Rivals breaks down QBS in to Dual Threat and Pro Style.
We've had some success w/ both. JR was definitely pro style and MF was probably more pro style than Dual Threat also. USC always goes Pro Style, while GA and Bama are both brining in pro style QBS this year. Obviously UF goes the other direction w/ Tebow.
Crowton has had Dickson and Rattay. Those guys were very different. He set records w/ Rattay, but after Dickson went down Oregon was done.
I think that w/ a Dual Threat guy he is more likely to be injured and that injury is more devastating to your year. So, if we must run a dual threat type QB, it's definitely good to have 2 of them.
But I wanted to hear other opinions on why so many believe Crowton needs a Dual Threat QB and why that is better?

he doesn't. but, it's always nice to have one that can get away from pressure at any time.

Well, i dont think he has to have a dual threat, but it fits his offense better. JR and MF were both pro style but they could also run a little, so he could throw in a qb draw every now and then to keep the defense off balance.
Lee has no mobility so it limits the play calling of the qb draw or qb rollouts. JMO

I don't think he needs one, don't forget we are also taking Chris Garrett out of MS this year.

Dual threat QB recruits are overall a "better" recruit than a pro style. They can more easily be transitioned into a different position if the coaches find that QB isn't where they'll succeed.
Additionally, dual threats make running an offense a hell of a lot easier. You can generally have more success when the QB is able to escape the rush and add another dimension to the passing game (scramble).

Good point.
IMO, beleive that running a pro set offense and controlling the line of scrimmage is the best way to win championships.

4 of the past 5 BCS Champions have ran an offense other than a pro set (West Coast, Spread Option).

versus SEC defenses, controlling the LOS is easier said than done. Having a QB that can make plays on the run, keeps the DL from pinning their ears back and going all out for the ball.

Pro-style QBs is really a crapshoot as far as recriting goes b/c the player's physical abilities are a much smaller part of whether the player will be successful on the next level (For every JR and Stafford there is a Rhett Bhomar and a Kyle Wright) as opposed to a dual threat QB.
Worst comes to worst, you can usually move a dual to another position at the college level and the player can contribute.

quote:He doesn't, but the key to Crowton's offense is to have multiple options, even beyond the spread or variant of the spread. That includes power I formation running, sweep, and option plays. This is why opponents have said in the major big games that LSU has won, that they "didn't know what was coming next".

I like a guy that can make all the throws BUT he has to be mobile in the pocket and make something happen when things break down. He doesn't need to turn into Barry Sanders when he takes off, but needs to extend drives every so often. That is something we NEVER had with JL and will learn to appreciate with JJ. Shepard isn't that type because he doesn't have the arm strength, but he is a special talent that will have to be tried IMO.
Crowton has shown he can make adjustments when he has too, but JL was a fricking statue that locked onto one receiver every play. That had to be incredibly frustrating for Crowton. It must have been like playing tennis against Roger Federer with a badminton racket.

He was at LSU Dickson's senior year when he went down

JR never played under Crowton FWIW.

FAIL
You think Oklahoma/Texas/Georgia would have traded their QB for any dual threat QB in the country? I dont think so.

So you say I fail, yet state exactly what I was saying?
Colt McCoy is not a pro style QB and if you think that, you are retarded. And I'm sure OU would love to trade their pro style QB away if it won them a damn bowl game.
The fact of the matter is that pro style QB's do not win championships in college football in this day and age. It has been proven time and time again that dual threat is the future of college football.

Just because Rivals or anyone else chooses to categorize QBs into multiple categories doesn't mean our coaches do the same, and I'd bet they don't. Ability to run the ball is just one of the considerations when choosing who to offer. We've taken kids from both categories, and I am pretty sure it wasn't to win the February "recruiting championship".

I know that and never said he played under Crowton. I can understand why you thought that, the way my sentence was worded. I was making a point that JR and MF were pro style qb's that could run a little. So as a offensive corordinator he could still keep the defenses off balance if he had qb's that were like JR and MF
