Hi, I am looking for a good microphone to capture a full band recording in a small room into garage band.
I know the levels will probably not be even with the drums, it’s just to capture initial recordings to work on. Been just using an iPhone so anything should be a step up, but curious if anyone has has success with a single mic setup they’d recommend.
Thanks

This isn't exactly what you were asking for, but the condenser mics built into these Tascam recorders do a really good live recording + you can use it to record 1 track at a time if you want.

For a single mic setup ideally you would use a large-capsule condenser mic set to omnidirectional in the center of the room. Not all condenser mics have an omnidirectional setting though.

Some questions:

When you mean “good,” how good? In other words, what is your budget?

What kind of preamps or audio interface will you be using?

What kind of room will you be recording in? Ex - floors, carpeted, garage, etc.

Sweetwater has the AKG P420 on sale for $159 right now. It’s their cheapest LDC mic mic that has the omni pickup pattern. I don’t have experience with this mic but AKG is a good brand. You should have enough gain from the Presonus. Carpet should help with the extra noise a little…LDCs tend to pick up everything.

You need a Telefunken' U47. With leather. You'll love it.

When we used to improv, we put a Shure 57 pointing up in the middle of the room about 3' off the floor, into a Boss 4 track recorder. You could hear everything on the playback to pick apart and write.

That sounds like a great idea and it may even sound better than a cheap LDC.

Instead of a single microphone, I’d consider a stereo recorder. This will give you some separation in the sound field. If you spent some time placing it and dialing in levels in the room, you might get a pretty decent stereo recording. There are many in the sub $150 range and I think they will all do better than a single sub-$150 mic

An example
