Anyone own one of these down here in South Louisiana? Live near lake Pontchartrain and am man enough to admit that I now know that I'll mostly use a boat for booze cruising and pulling kids, minimal fishing. Have been looking at a used Scarab 255 Open ID due to the layout and capacity. Don't see many of them around but interested if anyone has any experience with these style boats and their thoughts on them before I pull the trigger.

I don't know much about them but I have definitely seen a few of those around recently. They look like fun.

I own a Yamaha jet boat, Center console model. I used to run a dealership that sold both Yamaha and Scarab. Both are great boats and can handle just about any water down here. Only drawback with the 255 is fuel capacity and consumption. When those superchargers are spooled up you're burning some serious fuel and only have a 56 gallon tank if I recall correctly. If you run easy you can get a day out of it. Personally, I love my lil Yamaha, have taken it to Fl several times for vacation.

They stock several of them @ Lafayette Power Sports just off Hwy 90, so I'd think someone is buying them.

you just have to be careful running thru grass, mud etc. jet drives are best in open water and in/around rocky areas where a prop would be easily damaged. Since we don’t have rocks, it’s just about not getting anything sucked up into the drive…a plastic bag for example will ruin your day. Every jetski and wave runner is a jet drive

I can't imagine a benefit to owning a jet boat for the purposes described. They guzzle fuel compared to prop boats. They are hugely inefficient and about 80% of rated HP is a stretch - a 150 will perform closer to a 90 HP prop boat compared to the 120 most manufacturers claim They are lousy at low speed maneuvering which is already a pain the arse for most boats...they are hard to trailer, dock, even maintaining a straight line in no wake zones is a struggle. They are more maintenance heavy. They only perform well in clean sandy areas and rocks / gravel. They do not perform at all in mud and vegetation is straight out, they will find every blade of grass and vegetation and will clog up with it and they won't perform at all....anyone who has ever owned one will have stories of having to clear vegetation out of the jet while in the water, fine in the summer, a pain when the water is cold. They will, however, eat granite and spit it out like baby food...they certainly have a use where needed but its pretty specific. I have a jet foot for my 60HP tiller I bought to run shoals in the Yakima river and I have used it on the Savannah river above Augusta but I only put in on my boat when I am going small mouth fishing. It hasn't been used in years. They are really a pain in the arse on a tiller boat.

I have a Yamaha 212 Limited S with twin 180s. We got it because there are 2 grandchildren in the family that are on the autism spectrum and didn’t want any accidents from swimming near the prop. As for the trash getting sucked up Yamaha has a hatch you can open on the rear to clear a clog. I agree that they don’t steer well when idling but I don’t have a problem getting it on the trailer.

Honestly, it's mostly about the spacious layout and the fold out tailgate area. I plan on mostly being in the lake area so not too concerned about shallows with mud. Don't plan on doing a whole lot of long runs in it. Still not decided but I'm leaning that way. Looking into some outboard deck boats as well but honestly I'm just intrigued with the jet boat really and looking to try something different since I've always been around outboards.
