This sneaky low-lying weed is taking over my front yard. Any idea what it is?
Is it too late to kill or treat?
Yard mixed with a blend of centipede, St Aug, and Torpedo.

Kinda hard to tell from that picture, but it looks like wood sorrel. Does it look like tiny clover and has yellow flowers in the spring?

I posted a better pic. I don't remember the yellow flowers.
It has a thicker stem and lays low, beneath the grass. Best way to describe

Get the picture this app. It's free and can identify it.

Looks like common lespedeza LINK

In this heat, use MSM Turf or Celsius herbicide. (Item 1 & 4 on the attached fact sheet). Add surfactant (spreader-sticker). Herbicides containing 2,4D would likely damage your lawn grass in this heat. Might require additional applications at 3 to 4 week intervals.

thats lespedeza baw.

mix MSM turf 1/8th teaspoon per gallon + 1-2 tbsp spreader sticker and spot spray. It's pretty easy to spot in the lawn because it has that dark green. This mixture will smoke it but be patient it takes about 1 month to die off totally.

I saw a sprinkler running the other day so naturally I thought the folks cared about their lawn.
It was 60% lespedeza

lmao a freshly low-cut lespedeza utopia really is deceiving.

to be fair if it wasn't so hard and woody it would make a beautiful lawn

Bump...

I never got around to treating this weed last summer, and it is now making a comeback in my yard. When I started this thread in the summer, I was told not to use 2-4D to kill due to the summer heat.

With our current cooler temps, can i use 2-4-D on it now?

Also looks like spurge if it has a reddish stem. I'd caution if using 2 4-D on St. Aug and Centipede. For spurge, and if it's not a bunch, go ahead and grab that main root and pull it out the ground. That's the best way to get rid of it. Very easy to do after a rain. Again, assuming you don't have much and if you're yard is not that big.

I'm not calling you a liar, but it's pretty early to be seeing lespedeza.
Are you sure it's the same weed?

Key details about lespedeza emergence and growth:
Germination: Seeds begin to germinate in early spring (March-April).

Establishment: Seedlings are established by early summer (June).

Growth Pattern: Annual lespedeza thrives during hot summer days, often forming dense, prostrate mats.

Perennial Types: Sericea lespedeza emerges in mid-to-late spring (mid-April) from perennial root crowns.

Management: Pre-emergent herbicides for controlling annual lespedeza should be applied in early spring, before it emerges

I typically have a fine crop of lespedeza and it has not emerged yet!
This is an old thread.

Over the past tree seasons, this has been my #1 pest in my front yard. Last year, I hit it with one of the spray bottle products containing Atrazine, then followed up with high nitrogen fertilizer. Have not seen a single plant since.

It would make much more sense if it were Black Medic, which I suspect it is.

Should produce yellow flowers.

I have a good bit in my centipede. It’s quite prevalent this time of year.

Look at the direction of the lines on the leaves and compare.
I think it’s a 100% match: LINK

Yes, you can use 2-4-D all the way up until around mid May in SOULA. 2-4-D will damage St.Aug after about 85F-90F.
