Shoulder replacement- How bad is this going to be

Original surgery in high school. Pins inserted
25 years later shoulder is trash. Shots are ineffective now. Chronic pain.
New joint going in. How bad is this gonna suck.?
Not that it matters a whole lot because I’m out of options

Large friend had a knee replacement a little while ago, similar circumstances. Said he wished he'd done it sooner. Keeping up with PT will be even more important with a shoulder because it moves in so many more ways. If you cheat your body out of the PT, you'll pay for it later.

Every case is different. No need to drive yourself nuts worrying about it. Good luck to you.

I hope it’s not as miserable as rotator cuff surgery

Shoulder surgery is one of the harder rehabs to go through. It can be painful and it feels like it takes forever. Just make sure you do what the PT tells you to do, including the stuff at home. Remember this too shall pass. And you'll feel much better on the other end of it.
The shoulder joint has a lot of shite in a small space. So any kind of inflammation there causes issues.

I wish all that was wrong was a rotator cuff.
According to my surgeon the procedure I had at Tulane in the 90s is not utilized anymore due to long term degenerative issues which is where I am now.
I have lost significant range of motion due to arthritis and bone spurs. I have very little soft tissue in the joint due to the tension and pressure created by the original procedure. This has created a situation where there is no space between the ball and socket so it doesn’t rotate freely like a normal shoulder joint. This has also caused the rim of the socket to become thin and micro fractures to occur and heal and refracture and heal.
The real world result of all this is that any activity, swimming, golf, throwing a ball, painting a room, even casting a fishing pole for an afternoon is going to cause 2-3 days of significant pain. I’m only 40 but the older I get the worse the pain gets and the longer it takes to pass.

Damn that sucks, good luck to you, the results of the surgery have to be better than that

I hate to bitch because I have friends and family with significant knee and back issues which by my estimation would suck a lot worse due to decreased mobility but hopefully whatever comes next is an improvement.

Had 2 spinal fusions , hardware and the works, lower back bottom 4 discs, virtually pain free now , but they would have to kill me to do it again

Only advice I can offer is to always wear your sling when out in public. It tells people "Do Not Touch."

Shoulder joint replacements are an easier rehab than rotator cuff repairs. Not saying "easy", but "easier." Swapped out hard tissues like joints is easier than soft tissues like rotator cuffs and other complex shoulder reconstructions where the bones are fine, but it's all soft tissue recon.
Good luck and keep us posted.

My brother.
Had a cortisone injection on Thursday. My ortho said my shoulder is trash and a replacement is eminent.
I’m bone on bone. Football and powerlifting……had a separation early on that he believes set all of it in motion.
The chronic pain sucks and sleep being affected.

This had a Dr buddy had both done & was back at a scratch golfer in 1 year shoulder replacement from my friends said it was unremarkable.

I knew someone that did a replacement and this is the best advice you’ll get.
Even for a regular middle ager with shoulder pinches, the key is always small, innocuous PT type shite that annoys me and takes up valuable time but it absolutely works.
Be consistent and diligent with your PT and don’t let up. It will pay off.
Good luck man.

Replacement is a big deal, but it's not as miserable as you might think. The surgery itself is straightforward if you're with someone who specializes in shoulders only. What matters most is following the post-op protocol to the letter.
I was hesitant too, but after finally doing it I realized I should've gone sooner. If you're looking for reassurance, I'd say get a consultation with this Dallas shoulder doctor who focuses solely on these surgeries, they'll lay out the risks versus the long-term benefit.

Hey man good luck!
Please come back and post updates. Played football and rode motocross from 12 to 18 and I'm paying for it now. 4 surgeries so far 2 on both shoulders and currently living with a RC tear in left shoulder.
Keep us updated and good luck!

If in alot of pain you will be glad you did it. Will have some mobility limitations but should be pain free when its all said and done and have the majority of function.
3 to 6 months to full recovery

Have you tried radiation therapy for your shoulder? It may be too far gone, but we are having great results treating osteoarthritis. It may be worth a shot to help with the pain. It sounds like it may be too little too late, but it might be worth a try.
