The Lafourche Parish Council voted against suing oil companies to make them comply with Louisiana law after hearing from business leaders, lobbyists and others who cited fear of withholding money and killing jobs.
The council voted 6-1 against taking legal action June 3. Council Chairman Armand Autin was the sole vote to grant the parish president power to pursue the legal action. Councilmembers DJ Broomfield and William Adams were absent.

“We do receive a lot of assistance from the oil companies, and I think if this goes in the wrong direction, this could hinder our assistance,” Thomas Arceneaux, president of the Larose Civic Center, said. “Without the assistance that we get from the oil companies, we probably couldn’t stay open.”
Nine people filled out speaker cards to address the council on the issue. The representatives cited statistical data of jobs created by oil and gas, as well as money their organizations received to create change in the region.

The council held an executive session during an emergency meeting to discuss possible legal action to ensure oil companies comply with coastal zoning laws. It lasted for nearly two hours. Had the motion passed, it would have granted Parish President Archie Chaisson the power to direct the Block Law Firm to take any legal actions necessary to ensure oil companies comply with coastal zone laws, statutes and regulations.
In April, a Plaquemines Parish trial ended with a jury finding Chevron liable for $745 million in damages. The money is dedicated by law to wetlands recovery, as reported by NOLA.com. There are still 40 other lawsuits to follow. The lawsuits argue that oil and gas companies did not meet their legal obligations as set by 1980 Louisiana state law, requiring permits to operate in Louisiana coastal areas.
Terrebonne and Lafourche have been holdouts in joining this lawsuit.

According to Terrebonne Parish Communications Director Robbie Lee, Terrebonne is not considering joining the lawsuit.

Two industry groups, LMOGA and Grow Louisiana Coalition, have touted this as a sounding rebuke of the trial lawyer industry lining up legacy suits in the state.

Same reasons why car or home insurance is not gonna get cut or changed
Those two areas spend a ton of money on lobbying and towards politics to make sure their profits stay quite nice

Not directly, indirectly from its inhabitants working there.

Good. They should announce they will shut down all operations in any parish that joins one of these suits (and warn them they will also countersue for every dime of tax revenue they have paid to those parishes)

And the tolls. I think the Grand Islians sued because they were getting charged a fifty cent toll to use the bridge. Poor broke coon asses couldn't afford dat.

When Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes fall into the Gulf, they can thank themselves. I hope mediocre oysters were worth it, morons.
